Yo yo Soobi fans,

My L has a blown HG so while I have the engine out I figure It might be a good time to look closer into my engine and Gbox mounts issue. Im not sure if they need to be replaced. ie they look ok and feel ok when i pry on them with a bar. Well the engine ones seem fine, but Gbox are a little worn but not as bad as they feel. Im just not sure what the actual problem is. Symptoms are: gbox rises up into the tunnel when hopping off the acc and down towards the road when on the gas. It actually can hurt if you have your hand under the hi/lo range lever and acc from a set of lights etc. Not wheel spinning but just normal spirited take off. Now if I take off and then hope right off acc pedal abruptly there is a bang bang bang smacking metal on metal sound that seems to be coming more from the engine xmember. ie you cant feel the box hitting the floor etc but something is ary.

2" lift. Pitch bar came from my 3" kit but seems to fit well. Got a quote for gbox mounts at just over $100. More than happy to spend that if its the problem but im just not convinced.

rear diff main bush if the engine mounts and gbox mounts are okay.

Make sure the top mount is connected, this is the one from the firewall to the top on the engine/gearbox. Make sure the bushes are in good nick and done up tight.

That would have been my thought too - also check the mounting points of the stabiliser rod - there might be something a miss there.

Stabiliser rod.. I knew it had a real name, just had mental block

And good point too Bennie, I have fixed (rewelded) a couple of mounting plates to firewalls before. Not sure how commen it is but definately one to check out.

i thought he may have been referring to the stabiliser rod when he said the pitch bar seemed okay...

Looks like the stabiliser rod (pitch bar I called it) seems ok, in fact it seems damn stiff). The firewall mount for the rod also seems firmly attached still.

This shell has seem only some sand driving and had this issue form day one, so Im steering more towards some worn bush or something else misaligned etc. Was a S1L auto to S2L manual conversion. Everything seems correct with no real issues encountered. Though gear linkages were not long enough by 25mm to reach original stud that holds the assembly to the rear of the linkage area.

Rear diff bush is clearly a bit shagged. But I didn't think it would have been this due to the issue happening in 2wd the same as 4wd.

Those that have changed engine/gbox bushes. How did you know you needed to and how did they feel when driving and to manipulate with a tool under the car before renewing?

This issue has me baffled, and it doesn't feel good when driving...

I had shagged gearbox mounts on my L series, so I cut up an old pair of thongs and jammed a piece of rubber foam where the rubber used to be and problem fixed

Ok.. I'm still feeling like there is an issue with the stabiliser rod but without seeing it first hand, it's hard to diagnose. Could you please take and post up of this bar, mainly where it joins the engine (please take a couple of different angles) and we'll go from there.

If the mounts (engine or gearbox) are stuffed then you will see large cracks or breakage when prying away with a pinch bar or crowbar. Also look for signs where this 'metal on metal' sound is coming from, you should be able to see shinny bits.

My last concerns are your L.Series 4WD lever.. how do you get your hand under it? as mine have levers that stick up? similar to the gearshifter. Maybe pics may help there too.
