LSeries waterpump, coolant loss help please

Post by richard the fish » Sun Dec 04, 2011 6:52 pm

Hi all
My faithful sportswagon started to make a strange rattle today. I turned the engine off, restarted and it went away.I drove about 7km stopping a couple of times, then just as I got home it started again. I opened the hood and I think the noise is the main fan rubbing against the plastic cover that is over the top of it? The shaft that comes out of the water pump that drives the fan is loose, and there is a lot of movement in it.and the fan can move around quite a bit. I noticed there is a bit of coolant coming out under that spot, not much though.

Thanks

RTF:confused:

Yeah mate, I'm online.

I'd say you need a new water pump - shaft play has probably worn out the shaft seal and caused a leak. A new water pump will sort out the issue, you'll need to remove the cam belt cover to get to it properly - I can't remember if you need to take the cam belt off or not.

If you don't know the history of your cam belt, it's a good time to replace it with a kit that includes the idler pulleys. Just make sure you line up one cam, put the belt on, turn the crank ONE ROTATION and install the second belt - can't go wrong!

I'd not drive the L series until you get this sorted, otherwise it could result in either dead head gasket(s) or a dead EA82...

Cheers

sounds like a collapsed bearing in water pump from your describe. Need to be able to undo the 22mm crank pulley bolt, remove the front timing belt covers for best access to the $70 on ebay water pump. No need to remove timing belts for access, but it is good point to check and replace the bits. In the past eight weks a mate has had two Ls with broken belts and collapsed tensioner bearings in his shop. The first one tricked him :D

Thanks all.

Do I need to remove the belts to take the oil pump off as I will put a kit through that as well.

Cheers

1: measure the distance from the back face of the water pump to the front face of the fan pulley. Why? there were 2 different pumps used and the wrong one will put all the belts to air con etc out of whack. you must get one that matches.
2: replace the seal on the crankshaft while you have all the belts etc off. only a few bucks and a small leak can cause premature failure of the timing belts. be careful removing it you don't want to damage the surface of the crankshft.
3:once you have the shroud off from behind the radiator and the fan removed, cut the bloody shroud through at the bottom so it can be easily removed and replaced without shredding the backs of your hands. once cut just slips over easily after replacing the fan.. it still works fine.
4: put some locktite on the main crankshaft pulley bolt these always come loose and are a pain to replace, although if you have air con at least you don't generally lose them, if you don't have air carry a spare bolt.

tony is scaring you on item 1

water pump deck height for most EA82 is 110mm. If you are lucky to have EA82 with the multi rib 4?PK belts on a turbo EA82 really only the Vortex it wil be 105mm deck height

I thought you knew about this Jonno! I should have added that in my initial post, but I couldn't remember which one you needed as I've not done one of these for quite some time!

Cheers

Well, Jonno thought he had worked it out ! Chucked seven EA82 water pumps out recently, 3 or 4 EA81 ! Thought he was well qualified :(

apology gratefully received and very decent of you.
as a further complication, both pumps boxes had the same part number...deal with that!
so measure before you leave the parts shop!
Yes it was genuine factory.
also consider the pulley comes off the pump so a grooved pulley could probably be fitted thus causimg more confusion.

It's probably just that mounting flange on the pulley that's located differently to make up for the difference in the belts between the flat and V belt types...

Just a thought I've often wondered about, so if you've got a press or a centre pull you *might* be able to set it to where you need it if it's not correct from the start.

Cheers
