2005 Outback engine noise

Hello sorry I have just joined as my outback has had a tappet type noise develop.
*noise happens every time on cold start for about a second or two.
*noise happens between 2500 and 3500 when the auto transmission is about to change gear
*noise happens when engine under load (overtaking etc)
Subaru service centre are baffled- tried the cam belt tensioner -No.
Have gone all over block with stethoscope but no diagnosis--
car is high mileage 188000, but has been religiously serviced by Subaru service.
When I first heard the noise I checked all and found it was almost empty (I drive an old ute and check the oil at least weekly, enough said.). I believe that Subaru service may have not replaced the oil fully during the last service- I mention this as it could well have a bearing oin what the fault could be.
Thanks
PS I would appreciate any ideas as I am not looking forward to replacing engine or a rebuild as suggested by the service centre...

Hi and Welcome munungu

I would say you have a couple of different noises there. First thing in the morning would be low oil pressure and would be bearing clearances. Second noise at revs and under load would most likely be predetonation and this is what most likey has caused your bearing clearance issue. I have seen quiet a few EJ25 engines go this way.

Sorry if this is bad but this is just my opinion and without seeing the car first hand then it's hard to diagnose.

Cheers,
Paul

Thanks for the feedback Paul
much appreciated even if it isn't what I want to hear!
I am resigned to a rebuild, but at least it will prolong the life of the car.
Off the the industrial estate tomorrow credit card in hand.
Great to have a replay when the Subaru "techs" drew a blank...
Now I know where to go first.
Ps sorry if I am not following forum etiquette... I did read the notes for new members....
Thanks again.

No probs sir and personally I wouldn't go the full rebuilt way. As your car is still fairly young, you should be able to find some really low import engines that can be dropped in.
