Bad Fuel Economy, '97 Foz

Post by NachaLuva » Thu Mar 22, 2012 10:52 pm

My '97 Foz (EJ20J) has been running rich, using too much fuel (averages about 11L/100kms) & hesitates on acceleration. Also the tailpipe has a layer of soot in it.

A while ago, I put several cans of SUEC through it, plus new Iridium plugs & new leads.

So today I took out the O2 sensor but it doesnt look fouled up.

Can anyone tell me if these look ok?

I also cleaned out the PCV valve & hoses. There was quite a lot of gunk in there but they didnt seem blocked. When I cleaned the PCV valve, it seemed to rattle easily, so I think thats ok. From what I've read, blocked hoses/valve seem to be the cause of problems, but mine werent, just gunked up a bit.

Interesting note, there was some kind of hardened sealant on the valve thread...does this mean its been replaced at some stage?

Is there anything else I should do? 11L/100kms with gentle, economical driving is pretty crap!

I've heard of Foresters & Outbacks getting 9L/100kms with mixed city/highway & "spirited" driving.
Taza's economy blew me away, esp with the extra gear he carries & his driving style! lol. Although I have heard he is being much more gentle nowadays...

Try changing your fuel filter, it worked for me.

I spent 2 months changing leads, checking coil, doing the ignition relay mod as I was burning 13-14l/100K. Ended fixing with a $25 fuel filter.
If your spark plugs are also clean, then this might help.

Oxygen sensors only have a life of about 80,000kms, so if its older than that, its probably buggered

Forgot to mention has a new fuel filter. Also regular injector cleaner.

Engine's done ~170,000kms, not sure if its ever been replaced. How do I know if it needs to be?

Mines similar but abit less around town and abit more on the highway. More on the highway as almost everyttime im on the highway I have a good lload in and on the car.

Around town driving like a real person I get 10l per 100km or less but my engine is a newer model than yours.

Hammering it around town I never get worse than 12 or 13 at the most.

The best I ever had was driving over to Robe. I took my racks off for less wind resistance & focused on smooth, economical driving. Got bout 9.5L/100km.
Around town its more like 13. Overall I average 11-11.5 :(

Geez, that's a bit bad... I get around 10.5L/100km on the highway at 110 and around 11.5L/100km with my daily commute. But as you know, I've got an EJ255 turbo under the bonnet and this pretty much eliminates any chance of gentle driving
