Before I buy some and find out the hard way, are Gen2 and Gen3 cross bars interchangeable?

I put Outback Rola racks that fit between the standard racks on my Impreza, they are very easy to shorten, just slide the rubber on top back and you'll find a screw, undo it and remove one of the ends and cut to length then re drill a new hole, put the screw back in and slide the end back in, I'd say most will be the same.
Just measure the distance between the original racks on each car and if they are the same or longer than your car they will be fine.................But I don't take responsibility if I'm wrong.

I have a set off a Gen3 (99-03) and a Gen2 (94-98) to try them on but I wouldn't be able to let you know for a few days.
