Error codes SF Forester

Does any one know where I can find the list of codes or a manual for the early SF Forester? I have a check engine light and a code 54.
I have looked at various threads, and online workshop manuals, but it seems that the Aussie SF is a bit different to everything else.
The car has been sitting for a while and now that I've got it running it has a rough idle and the check engine light stays on. It is also currently unregistered, so I can't take it anywhere, and I won't be able to register it with this code...

Thanks Toonga.
after going through that site, and pdftown as well, and downloading a few hundred meg of various manuals (I tried some other models too) I still can't find the right one. These manuals show MAFs, cam angle sensors, ECUs under the dash, and they look to be OBDII. Mine has a MAP sensor, crank angle sensor only, and the ECU is bolted to the drivers side head.
The closest I could find (with a listing for 54, most don't go past 53) was under 'Subaru specifc troule codes' found on scoobypedia. It listed 54 as 'air intake system', which doesn't narrow it down much.
I tried the air temp sensor to no avail, MAP sensor is next. Will see how that goes.

workshop manual says : because the ducts and hoses on intake line are loosened or damaged, the pressure sensor signal is abnormal"

thanks for that Frog.
I tried another MAP sensor, no change. I didn't have all of the airbox ducting installed, so I tried that, but still no change. I will have to have a closer look and see if there are any cracked vacuum lines when the light is a bit better, but I couldn't see any before.

I use
Subaru Engine Codes - troublecodes.net ...it says "Choke control system".
Not sure if that helps though...

Unfortunately that is under '83 - 88 Subaru carb models'
Why a carb engine has an ECU is beyond me.....

Where and how are you getting these codes?
Does you engine have the black plastic manifold?
When the engine is running, can you spray some CRC (or similar) around the manifold area and see if the revs change?
