Ej25 wont start after accident

Post by guyph_01 » Tue May 08, 2012 8:44 pm

Ok so the car had a front hit. rad and fans got stuck with the main pulley. Got it all off and tried to start it. It turns over but nothing at all. No wired noises etc.

Could timing be off? Would the valves and piston touch with it being a quad cam?

Could it be because the airbags went off that it isn't starting? some fail safe?
What else could it be?

Will look into it more tomorrow, i'e check for spark and fuel:)

Could the damage to the radiator support crushed the wiring loom and blown either fuses or a fusible link?

Does the CEL come on?

The timing cover is broken and might have got wedge between the belt and pulley causing it to jump.

Only thing is i'm only familiar with single cam engine. I've got no idea how to tell if the timing is right.

What are wired noises supposed to sound like?
guyph_01 wrote:Could timing be off?
Possibly
guyph_01 wrote:Would the valves and piston touch with it being a quad cam?
No but valve can hit valve if inlet and exhaust cams turn out of time
guyph_01 wrote:Could it be because the airbags went off that it isn't starting?
No
guyph_01 wrote:some fail safe?
Nope

Where do we start.. it can be a huge list of things

You need 3 things for an engine to run.. check that you have them first then go from there.

a can of start ya bastard to spray in intake ducting - use a friend for this job while you crank, just in case of a backfire :D , not sure whether to suggest this first or use another friend to hold lead off plug a few mm off engine block and crank, see if friend jumps, if so, you may have good spark and he felt it

Was that photo taken without you moving the engine? If it was it does look like the belt has skipped. You may have bent valves, re align it all and do a compression test.

Align the two notches on each cam wheel. I would ignore the paint marker marks, they seem a bit random.

I turn it over and nothing seems to be touching so i'm hoping for the best.
That diagram is very helpful. Will play with it tomorrow.
Thx

My EJ25 RX had a similar problem, So I started basic fault finding but I bought it as a wreck and had a big whack or two. But in the end I worked out the fuel pump was far too quiet so pulled it off to replace it when I found both the wires for it just dangling in the fuel. I hooked them back up and hey presto I wont say it fired up but it started and purred like a kitten!
Worth a try or even listen for it!

Awesome drawing but please pay no attention to the keyway on the crankshaft pulley.. when the crank is lined up correctly, the keyway should be at 6 o'clock (pointing down) and the aligning mark on the crankshaft pulley is on one of the tabs for the crank angle sensor, which will line up with a notch in the oil pump casing.

Guy.. if you could line up the crankshaft pulley so the keyway is at 6 o'clock, then (without moving anything) take pics of the camshaft pulleys (all 4) and we should be able to tell you if something is wrong. This won't tell you if any of the valves are bent, best to do a compression test once the timing belt is aligned correctly.
