EA82 Transplant only 80% successful

Post by Subatron » Fri Sep 14, 2012 11:40 am

Hello,

I have an EA82 (NA) which I have transplanted out of a wreck. .

Was very happy to start with and got the usual 10 L/ 100km for the first 200 km then problems started.

Loose power up hill, run kinda rough and very thirsty. Noticed that earthing out #1 and 3 (RH bank) cylinders did no difference to the idle - thought was no compression but compression gauge check was all good.

Cleaned dizzy cap and then noticed the coil sparking at night time (engine woudl miss a beat at the same time as spark).

Changed leads, spark plugs and distributor cap and rotor button, and put in 2nd hand coil (doesn't appear to spark). Went well for 100km (although missed a beat evry now and then) then started with symptoms again and its unquenchable thirst for fuel.

at the moment it is very thirsty (circa 15-20 L / 100 km ) which is unfeasible and when i put hand on exhaust gets covered in soot.

Other symptoms - oil in air box - flat spot on acceleration.

Any thoughts of what to do next would be greatly appreciated!

with oil in the aircleaner, I would say you have a rather bad case of blow by caused by ring / piston wear.

the flast spot on accelaration could be a stuffed carby, is it the hitachi or a weber upgrade?

my suggestion would be to do this

showthread.php?t=11733

or this

showthread.php?t=15851

sorry

or according to knowledgable Subaru mechanics there is a hose of some sort at the carby if blocked/disconncted/broke of or something can cause the oil build up at air filter box.

I have no idea.

I have had however an engine or two with blow by that went well, gave no economy problems at all. one, an EA82T went the strongest of them all until up mountains then blow by pressure helped oil up its back breathing passage and into the efi turbo intake - ala batman style smoke screen :) Burn that out and went like the powers again

Choke comes off, i.e. revs come down when she warms up

yeah blow by isnt really a problem unless it becomes excessive.

id be looking(and listening) for vacuum leaks. Could also be a poorly tuned carby.

Thanks for the insights.

Tuning a carby - do you have a procedure, or just twiddle with any screws etc. that i can find while it's idling?

I used to use really flammable stuff like whatever was around that evaporated quickly like thinners, white spirits as a cheap form of carby cleaner. maybe do it safer and buy can of carb cleaner and follow their instruction let it disolve gums and varnishes in the carbs air bleeds and jets etc , watch black innards turn to look like new and see how she goes. Maybe a temp catch can for rocker cover hoses (coke bottle?). Oh, if air filter is badly blocked think you will find air fuel ratio alters - burns more fuel than air than needs, blows balck smock
