Oil change - 1983 Touring Wagon - brands?

Edited 1893 - Horse and cart from the middle ages.

Im keen to to do an engine oil change on my 1983 MY Automatic Touring Wagon.

I realise people may have personal favourites and preference etc - rational or not, but figure a Subaru forum is the place for this question!

For example, a (subaru) mechanic I saw recent said not to go with a Penrite oil, he didn't really elaborate - Any way

20W50 - What brands of oil are people using, whats good, and any to avoid?

Cheers.

Penrite Hpr 30 full mineral for me.
Reccomended to me by the bloke that rebuilt my engine.

Mineral 20W-50 in the EA's

I've tried out the "extra 10" in my EJ and I'm pretty happy with that. I think that was a 20W-60, but not sure on the mineral or semi synthetic. I think it's a mineral oil as that's usually my preference.

Cheers

The oil I mentioned is 20w50 with the extra 10 to boost to 20w60.
An L series from 1893, how many times has it gone round the clock? You must look after her really well!

It is a time travelling Subaru, I wonder how the doctor got it through the doors of the TARDIS? or did he just materialise around it?

Do you know what the last owner was using ? I would stick with that.

I must be dyslexic.

Not sure what the previous owner used, it was sold on their behalf.

Cheers for the comments :) Glad I was able to entertain! haha.

I use Penrite, personally nothing better and it keeps a nice clear colour, Ive used castrol valvoline in the past and seem to go black straight away.

Of course it's personal choice but because of it's age, I would use a 20W50 oil and change at every 10,000kms or 5,000kms if you don't do too many kms per year. I would however recommend you stay clear of the 'magnatec' types of oils, these oils tend to clog up oil galleries, which doesn't seem to hurt old holdens and fords but makes a mess of Subaru engines.

Now, please don't start a thread asking what oil filter preferences :)

Some swear by genuine to prevent issues. Me? been happilty using Pheonix and Maxx brands of Z493 for years.

Hahah, I could go on and on!

No I think Ill draw the line there, the budget will probably leave me at the REPCO counter.

I also use Valvoline XLD 20w50, and had a Ryco filter in it before the most recent change but filters don't make any difference on my engine; the oil is always black. Last change I was forced to use XLD 20w60 "high vis" since that was all there was in that product line. For some reason looking at the bottle in the store I was thinking high vis meant it was going to be bright yellow or something  Apparently just keeps it's viscosity at higher temps. Haven't had an issue with it yet.

Oh? So you have a healthy budget ? :D Yes REPCO oil filters either meet or exceed the OEM specs and they may successfully sue anyone that suggests, or has suggested otherwise.

I get mine through trade at six at a time and well, you can pay more for a can of Coke (never forgets the $2 can at Circular Quay in 1992!)

The budget is constrained substantially at the moment, some would say 'unhealthy'.

When you say 'trade' what exactly do you mean? trade price somewhere? or bulk?
