1990 auto liberty

Hey all, I brought this auto liberty with a bad seal in the gearbox so fixed that and now I can't get the gear selector cable to to reach the linkage when its in neutral on the shift and neutral on the linkage the cable shoots past it by about 1 cm I have used the adjustor's on the end of the cable and it still wont hook up I am stumped??? when I first hooked it up to what I thought was ok but wasn't the car wouldn't go in any gear at all it selects it on the shift and the dash but doesn't lock into any gear at all only every now and then any help with this would be much appreciated the book tells me bugger all
