Coolant leaking near sump?

Post by LIFTED » Sun Feb 10, 2013 12:24 pm

I just replace a small leaking hose connecting onto the thermostat and I have now noticed another leak.
But this one looks like it's coming out from where the sump bolts onto the engine. One drip every 15 seconds $20 worth of coolant just dripping away:mad:
I'll attach a pic
Any ideas where this leak might be coming from?

Gravity rules, is that a green drip on the timing cover? Below the waterpump?
Follow the trail.
L serious, still.

Is this the liberty or the forester?

Looks to be coming from the hex head plug in the middle of the picture. I would try a tube of silver seal or the one that is copper flakes in a bottle. both products are around 10 dollars.

Personally, I'd avoid any type of sealant that has metal flakes in it, I've been there and destroyed and seized the water pump with that stuff.
Of course, it did mean the leak got fixed, as well as the timimg belts...

I didn't notice the coolant on the timing cover, it looks like you may be up for a new water pump :(

Since its where the water pump side is - i would say its coming from the water pump. Timing Belt has to come off...
Other place would be these hex head bolts but uncommon for it to leak there. I have also noticed a small green drip just next to the thermostat - that is closer to where the water pump is.
Cheers

Yep gravity sucks.
Jules yes it's my Liberty:(
Yes it is a drip on the timing cover but it's seems to be more of a dried up drip as i it's quite thick and "cluggy" whereas the other stuff near the hex plug is fresh I too thought/hoped it may have been from the hex plug.

Mike, having a closer look at the pic, it appears that the coolant is running along the sump (as I see some up forward as well), so my best guess without seeing it first hand would be the water pump.

Maybe someone sold you a dodgy car??? haha

I would give it a good wash down with degreaser and go for a run around the block and then check it again.

No - I was referring to wash it down and have a closer inspection.
