IMPREZA GX 2000 Air flow sensor

Hi just wondering if anyone has had problems with their maf sensor?Have had this problem for ages and done quite few things but no fix as yet talked to our mechanic and without seeing it(he's 4 hours away) he thinks it the maf.The engine is surging and jumping up the revs it happens at any speed and is happening more and more,its an auto if that matters,anyways thanks guys
