Cv joints on the way out?

Post by jims » Tue Feb 12, 2013 9:39 pm

Hi guys,

After not driving the L for a few weeks I found he is now making a clicking noise (front right hand side) when turning and slowing down to a stop. The noise goes away when I am driving straight.

Does this sound like the cv is on its way out? Or perhaps something else? While the boots are worn they have not broken through anywhere yet. However, I don't know when they were last replaced.

Thanks for the advice,
James

Could be cv's, hard to tell without actually hearing/seeing the car. Probably worthwhile having someone help you pinpoint it from outside the car before you start throwing money at it. You can do just the problem side if you want, but it's not the worst idea to do everything in pairs.

Got hubcaps with creaking contact with the rim ?

Some say to swap left with right so you wear them the other way - never tried it myself

You could just drive it until it spits out the bearings through the boots then just whack him in four wheel drive to get home :)

A good test is to put the steering in full lock and do a circle. The clicking is at it's worse. Sounds like CV's. PS I'd do the pair.

Thanks guys.

Lol Steptoe, I like your style :P

I will try the reverse turn and see how it goes.

Ps honed the cylinders out today on my ea82 rebuild. Should start going back together next week...will post when it does.

I wouldn't really worry about a small click. Once it's sounding like a grind then replace the CVs! Try to get it a bit before it's sounding like a grind.

Another trick to try is swapping the CVs from left to right so they run on the other side of the cage. This can get you some extra time sometimes - it's worth a try.

Well I guess if someone has actually tried it (me) it's worth sharing if someone has already mentioned it but has never done it.

But that could just be me...
