Yet another noise

Hi,

I've got a 1997 2.5 liberty that I recently put a dual range gearbox out of a 2000 forester into, along with a new clutch (clutch pro).

It has a single mass flywheel that I got machined. I also replaced the rear main seal and the inspection plate.

All of a sudden I got this grinding noise when accelerating as the engine passes about 2000k revs. The noise is also noticible when the vehicle is in neutral (clutch disengaged) as the revs drop to idle after being reved up.

Since I put the new clutch in I've also noticed a smell, I thought this was greese burning off the exhaust as a CV boot exploded a while ago but it could be related...

Regards,

Ben Smith

It seems that the noise is coming from the front right of the engine.

I took that side of the timing belt cover off to find quite a bit of oil which also seems to be dripping onto the exhaust causing the smell.

Could a leaking cam seal be related to the sound?

If the a cam seal is leaking that bad, you best think about replacing the cam seals, timing belt, idlers etc, before the belt breaks.

The noise won't be the seal. Could be water pump, or timing belt idler.

I'm going to do a full timing belt replacement with seals, idlers and waterpump to fix the leak.

But the rattle could actually be just a simple exhaust heat shield that is loose.
