Brumby fuel gauge

On my 89 brumby I've been having dramas with the fuel gauge in the last few weeks, when its full it reads as such but it's not dropping past 3/4 on its way down. Would this be a gauge issue or a sender issue? Is it a common fault?

It could be either. I'd check the sender first as it's easier to get to.
On our scooter it was the sender that was rusted up from sitting around for so long.
Hope this helps

Hi Muz, my brumby fuel gauge was doing the same thing, like it since I bought it. Seemed to fix itself after I slammed into a wombat, so am reasonably certain it was the sender in my case. Expensive exercise to diagnose the fault though:(

I had the same problem then I saw a brumby at the wreckers with an earth from the body to the bolts on the sender. I tried it and it solved solved the problem.
Just be careful undoing a bolt on the sender as you may end up needed a new gasket.

And the tank has to be pretty empty before you can unbolt the sender without fuel leaking everywhere. I was under 1/4 tank and parked on a hill when I unbolted mine and fuel still poured out

Have you measured the resistance coming out of the sender? Full tank will be something around 5 ohms and an empty tank will be around 95 ohms. Donno how handy you are with electronics but if you get yourself a variable resistor pot and stick it onto the wires going to the sender you should be able to make the gauge go up and down. Alternatively, if you have a multimeter, next time you have a full tank, unplug it and measure it, should be ~5 ohm. Then after ~250km measure it again, should be ~50ohm. Again before you fill up and it should be ~95 ohm.
If those numbers don't match its probably the sender.

resistor wheels are about 30 bucks at jaycar - cheaper than refueling a hire car !

Sweet, ill try having a look at it with the multimeter and see what it comes up with
