Stalling/won't start after short drive? 98RON?

Post by MadRX » Tue Dec 03, 2013 7:22 am

Haven't a clue where the best place to ask this would be so, any members using 98RON had a problem starting their car after parking for short periods?

I would tend to believe the cause was flooding if it weren't fuel injected. I wonder if this is caused by 'vapour lock'? If so, what is a remedy? :(

EDIT: Ok, obviously this is due to heat within engine bay. Also, fuel line being close to heated engine parts etc but, wouldn't think lines were close to exh mani or such?

Going to go over line position this morning.

Found a good temporary trick. Use wooden pegs on fuel lines to act as heat sinks, esp where line is closest to heat source. Will try this as the weather is getting warmer here in OZ (start of summer)

Another is open the bonnet for a few mins before starting after short trips.

It helps others if you put your Subie & mods in your signature ;)

I wouldnt think its heat if it only does it after a short drive, the heat soak into every component is far greater on a long drive.

I often use 98 or 100RON when I go offroad, no trouble starting then or when I switch back.

You could try a new fuel filter, may be blocked...

I'd say it's not the fuel but more an issue with electrical and just a coincidental thing.

Check for signs of the injectors staying open or leaking.

Just a recap guyz on the prob.

Seems problem is fixed & I now have better economy (will be certain when I fill up & check litres)

I put a homebrew upper cylinder cleaner & injector cleaner in fuel

Will be definite when I know the klms traveled once I fill up again. Will post back then with more details on what I did

Basically (& do not endorse this @ all) I used to use WD40/CRC through the TB as an upper cylinder/valve cleaner. Before I knew about the Sooby service type they use. I also changed the airfilter as it was a bit blocked up.

Thought I'd experiment since the thing kept playing hard to start after short trips.

Even with this heat. It has only happened once since shooting the WD40 down a inlet mani vacuum line entry point. About 1/3 normal 355ml can.

Also, added ATF to the fuel tank. Firstly, added just under 100ml to just 15 odd litres? Then, 1/3rd bottle roughly to a full tank, so not to overdo it.

Runs better & got 570kms until fuel light came on yesterday. Mainly suburban driving. Before the trial I only got 470-480 when the light would come on = approx 48L fuel usage.

I think that's amazing for a 1500kg car ;)

agai, this was an experiment using lubricants only!

In the ol' days, race crews would use a mix of 1/3 Brake fluid to 2/3 petrol but this was prior to cat converters! Then came the WD40 thing.....
