2000 Liberty Auto stalling at junctions
Hi again,
I have a MY00 Liberty with 84,000 km. Recently started cutting out at Junctions, often leaving the "power" warning light flashing, but not always. The "AT OIL TEMP" light comes on when it dies but goes off after restart. Feels like the problem is getting progressively worse.
This next bit might be coincedence but I'll add it anyway. When the tank is low on petrol it seems worse, if I fill her right up the problem seems to improve greatly and some fills it goes completely.
I've already had a mechanic look at it and he could find nothing so this is a bit of a last resort, I'm hoping someone has had a similar problem that they managed to fix!

AT temp light suggests an issue with the transmission, my guess is the torque converter is locking and stalling the engine. This could be caused by a faulty solenoid allowing pressure when it shouldnt or a faulty sensor confusing the tcu and allowing the tc to lock.
You will have to find the test plug and read the transmission fault codes

IME, you're much better off going to a Subaru specialist than a regular mechanic as most dont understand Subaru mechanicals & could waste a lot of time/money chasing ghosts.
I've never tried them but maybe give these guys a go:

BTW Gannon, great find for AT codes. Does it work for other ATs or just Outback/Liberty?
Dax, it didnt mention a long pause between flashes means a new code. Make sure you have pen/paper with you as if it has multiple codes you'll be busy counting flashes lol

All Subaru auto transmissions are basically the same (aside from the obvious Phase I and II) and a few other details. The procedure should work for all EJ auto's except for maybe the very latest ones

As it happens I haven't checked the oil level, I just (wrongly) believed if the fluid was low the light would stay lit. I'm presuming that the AT oil check is under the air filter box?
Once I've checked that (and the codes) I'll take your advice and book it in.

Do you tow much with the car? When was the last time the transmission fluid was changed?
I'd look at getting it serviced and pickup filter cleaned. I'd also recommend you fit a transmission cooler radiator if you are doing any sort of towing.
