MY/Brumby fuel pump controller

Post by steptoe » Sun Dec 29, 2013 9:40 am

Found out by tinkering - the black box up above accel pedal that supplies power to electric fuel pump up back does not give pump a priming shot with ignition on, not even on cranking - engine has to be running and back off starter circuit I think - ign on.

If this unit ever plays up and needs replacing - an LPG safety cut out black box would be a suitable choice to keep safe and gives a five second prime blast with initial ignition on - might save dumping fuel down throat of carby when ya run outta petrol !

8 year old petrol stinks somptin' shockin' ! :)

The one in my old l series would prime on ignition on then continue once it got ignition pulses from coil

I bypassed one in a brumby so it was always on with constant ignition. Never had an issue start ever since.

It depends on what year your vehicle is. The early ones stay on all the time ('85ish era), the mid ones will prime for about 5 seconds then shut off ('88ish era) and the newest ones will only run with the engine running ('91 era).

That's what I've found anyway. The same thing follows suit in the L series.

I found to keep pump powered with engine not running floods carby, so it has more than a safey purpose

I thought the pump was supposed to come on with ignition on before starting, fill the fuel bowl until the needle closed and the back pressure would switch the pump off...that's how it was on my wagon I'm pretty sure.
Will it ever end!?

For safety reasons, ADR rules that the fuel pump is to shut down if the engine stops turning. This is so there is no pumping of fuel if the car has been in an accident and feeding a fire if there was one.

Like Bennie mentioned.. the early ones ran all the time until the new laws came into play. Later ones never primed unless they were EFI.
