Fuel pump
Fuel pump
Hello all.
I have a 2001 Outback.
Well about 5,000 k's ago my fuel pump stopped working.
Lucky it happened in the driveway.
It was strange that it made it home, then stopped.
I didn't know it stopped until I tried to start it the next day.
Anyway I got a new pump and put it in.
Well yesterday it did the same thing.
But this morning I turned the key and the fuel pump started and so did the car.
I just tried it again, but again no noise and it wont start.
What should I be looking at?
I can't work out why some times it works and other times it wont.
Everything seems to be connected and tight.

You need to check the fuel pump relay and 1. see if its turning on and 2. see if power if getting through to the pump.
I'll have to check, but the H6 may have a variable speed pump so the earth of the pump will go through the ECU. Could be a faulty transistor in the ECU

Power seems to be getting to the pump.
When you turn the key the intank pump makes a buzzing sound and it will start.
But sometimes it wont make the noise and then wont start.
I started it today no prob. But then later no pump and it wouldn't start.
I just did it again and the pump did work and the car started no prob.
I'll have to get someone around to have a look with a multimeter.
I don't like wires lol..
I undid the fuel cap and it seemed like there was pressure as you could hear the air .
Thanks I'll let you all know how I go.

Is the Check Engine light coming on?
Sounds like it's the Ignition Relay playing up

I'd grab the codes in memory on the ECU. This my give us a better clue as to why the car stopped.

It has been fine for the last few day but today it did it again.
No check engine light on the dash.. No fuel pump.
So where will I find that relay?
Is it one of the ones near the fuse box in the car?
Thanks heaps for your help..

It will be up above the inside fuse panel, roughly above your right foot, look for a light brown plastic relay

Yeah.. just as Gannon has mentioned and have a search on this website, as someone did the "Ignition Relay Conversion" which looked like it would help. I haven't done this yet myself but in principle it should be better than standard unit.
