86 leone running strangely

Post by midlifecrisis » Tue Sep 19, 2006 3:29 pm

Hi people

I have a 86 EA82 leone that is doing some strange things like the tacho is jumping around ,when the revs are low all the warning lights start to glow and it seems to have a miss and it sounds like it is pinging for a short time 15-20secs then runs good again,it only does the miss and pinging sound every so often not all the time.
Does anyone have any ideas as to whats may be going on ??

thanks for any help

Marc

when ur warning lights etc are comming on at low revs it sounds like your alternator is not producing power...probably as a result of the low revs

sounds like alternator to me or crossed or cut wire touching on metal....do you have trouble starting it?

Ok no trouble starting starts great first turn of the key.
The cut or crossed wire where would I look for this at the alternator?

find someone with a multi meter and get them to check if the alt is charging the battery, off memory i think your battery should be charging around 13 to 14 volts/amps ,people who use multi meters should know what to look for.good luck

Sounds like i am gunna agree with all the others here and say its your alternator. This can also cause the pinging that you have as if there is insufficient power to make the car run eradically this will also tell the fuel cut off on the carb to shut off as well as producing a less then great spark.

Had just same in the Brumby. Swapping over alternator fixed it. Only an at idle problem and 'overlooked' it for weeks and weeks. never let me down.

My L without an engine , did it before engine came out so lookin' forward to same fix

and for once I do not agree with Suby Wan in the 'as well as producing a less than great spark' - if your problem is only at idle

14.4 to 14.8 volts is what your look for on a multimeter at medium revs

if multimeter battery inside itself is weak I have had higher readings , like 17 volts ! aka false reading

Hi guys
Great for the info I will go tomorrow and get another alternator and will let you know how it goes.

I checked the dissy today and found the plate was sticking so freed it up so I will see how the pinging goes now.

thanks again

13 to 14 volts from your alternator is normal. See if the voltage drops when the problems occur. That will signify there is a short in your wiring somewhere. If it does, it will probably be between your battery and starter motor positive wire. If it was a shorting problem anywhere else the fuse should blow for that circuit. You could also try disconnecting the charging wire (biggest one) from your alternator once your engine is running. That way you ignition/spark plugs are running purely off your battery. If the fault goes away, you may have a dodgy alternator. Don't leave it like this for too long obviously as your battery will go flat. Good luck

Hi
After driving the car for 2 days since I oiled up the dissy it seems to have stopped the ping/miss stuff, Just have to work on the alternator.
