g5 my17 impreza shifter knob removal

Hey everyone
I've been looking online on how to remove an automatic shifter knob..... It seems fairly straightforward on other cars but I can't seem to figure out my subies design.
I can get the silver base off to access the pins and am able to pull the whole shifter knob and rod out but the question is, how can I separate the knob from the rob in order to install aftermarket knob?
I've looked all over the web and am starting to feel like I've hit a dead end.
