Seems theres some strange little features on L series subarus eg:

*the light switch on the steering column
*threaded hole for spare wheels in the boot/cargo area of wagons
*being able to make the bonnet almost 90deg by moving the bonnet rod thing
*storage compartment under floor
*hill holder

Now i just noticed a rotarty dial with what looks like a vent directally under the steering column, I turned the heater on but didnt notice much air coming out, doest anyone know what this is for?

*Light switch is parking lights (ie, for the parkers to stay one after the engine is turned off)
*I think the threaded holes are for a cargo barrier
*The rotary dial is for when your fan is set to blow onto your face (generally this is supposed to cool your nadgers when the aircon is turned on in summer).

bonnet is so the motor can come out the top without taking it off, and so you can work on the engine bay easyer??

Ahhhh it's nice of Fuji Heavy Industries to think of the drivers back wheels.

Anyone know of any other quirky design features in these cars?

tiny 3rd front speaker under the passenger side dash- dont know why but found it once on my old wagon.

yeh some bummo l-series had the one speaker awesome stereo..

our old MY had an AM only stereo with a single speaker in the dash sumwhere..it was shocking!

*threaded hole is for a spare wheel-with a standard bolt it fits a 14" speedy with tyre nicely
also i've found 2 holes under the rear seats that allow you to get at the brake lines from memory

And the tool box in the floor apparently comes in handy when you need an ice box - wraith gave me this idea...

ha. where is this 3rd speaker located? Must check to see if it is there, because it wont be good for sound quality

The third speaker is mounted under the dashboard above the glove box.

There are some holes in the dash where the sound is meant to come out... my L still has this speaker here even though its not used. You should beable to get to it by removing your glove box and sticking your head up there, should be easily visable...

Ha. I see where it is meant to be obviously mine is long gone (which is good). Would be a good place to mount a GPS unit or even a centre driver or something because there is a decent wack of space there

I've thought about mounting an amp up there for the 6x9's... gotta find one that can a) do the required job and b) fit in that space. I'd probabily run some small CPU fans to get some air flowing over it...


Oh, and adrian, the hill holder is an awesome "thing". When the car in on a backward incline the hill holder comes into operation when the clutch pedal is pressed down and the brakes have been applied. When you take your foot off the brake pedal, the clutch holds the brakes and if adjusted properly will let go of the brakes as the clutch is biting. Make hill starts a dream (and if your sh*t at them will make you look like a pro). Sure beats a handbrake start.

Ive got that little dash speaker in mine, haven't had a chance to hear it because it was dissconnected, i was thinking of making a little kit amp for it and hooking it up to a earphone socket so I can use it for the gps. Now my stereo has headphone IN, I can play mp3's of my pda while using the gps and phone functions through the stereo, so Im not sure if ill bother with hooking up the little speaker.

The tool box would make a good esky except for 2 things
* its not insulated
* its unreachable from the seats

I bought one of those cheap 12v cooler/heaters from ****smith for $20, it fits nicely behind the centre console above the driveshaft hump in the back. It wont cool a drink from warm but it will keep an already chilled one cold for hours.

With these cold mornings now in melbourne im thinking of buying one of those 12v seat massuers with heating, putting it on the seat then a seat cover to neaten it up. Should provide almost instant heat in the morning to the seat, ive seen them for $50 at the supermarket

Agreed there. With a little work it could be insulated, but for a quick esky in the car enough ice could keep something cold for the weekend...

Pimp it out! Currently, since the weather's just gone bad (and petrol prices have jumped) i've been riding my bike everywhere and leaving the subi at home. A heater on the bike would go awesome somedays, a weather shield would be better on others...

with that 3rd speaker- ive thought of using a replacement one solely for a cb radio- so u can have music going and still be able to hear tranmissions whilst 4x4ing. only thing is i need a car cb first.....

Its the air ducting down near your knees/shins... Its just another part of the climate control system for the drivers comfort. I've never used mine and i don't think it really works that well anyway...
