Hi Kids,
Over the past week I have started to hear a slight knock or clunk coming from the front end of the car while moving. I can only hear it when accelerating around a left hand corner. The sound is rythmical, ie 1 knock per revolution of the wheels.
This is the first front wheel driven car I have ever owned so not familiar with diagnosis.
CV joint?

Check your CV joints and see if the rubber is still there!

CV's first then check your hub isn't loose or the splines aren't worn.

Fatz it is definately coming from the front of the car.
I will get under there this weekend.

Does this sort of thing need to be changed soonish? It is only on one side and only mildly noisy, but as I said I am naive when it comes to FWD running gear so would appreciate some pointers. eg
Sourcing new ones
Difficulty in replacing (I am mechanically savvy but never done this job before)
Best brands etc

There may be a threa covering this but a quick search didn't reveal much.

By the way car has all the bits and pieces from a Jap front cut if that makes parts different, and a 2'' lift.

Cheers

Hey Julian,

Both my front CV's are clicky, mainly whenever they're the inside wheel through a tight corner. They'll need replacing but i don't have the money or time so i just put up with it. Been doing this for almost 6 months. Hopefully they can hold out another 6 more.

My left hand side also makes a squeeking noise, one per revolution of the wheel. I've checked the castle nut, wheel nuts, brakes. I'm thinking it may be the bearings or the seal on the back of the hub is loose or something. It goes away when i turn the stereo up :D

And as julian asked: best brands/place to get them from?

Cheers

Maybe a new set of speakers would be a cheaper alternative. Hahahaha!

sure you could keep driving it..when it blows you will have NO drive what so-ever, if that happens just shove her in 4wd and you will have rwd!..

Don't rule out a wheel bearing issue either, but this sounds like a CV issue.

To remove the shaft you'll need (L-Series):

* 36mm (L-Series) or 32mm (Lib/Impreza) socket + breaker bar (or spanner?) & possible pipe extension for extra leverage
* something to lever off ball joint (without damaging CV boot) from lower control arm (12mm or 14mm nut).
* 6mm (check that size for L-Series) pin punch & hammer to remove spring pin from gearbox end
* Something to tighten up CV boot band clamp if not replacing with a complete shaft

Think that's about it

Good time to replace wheel bearings / seals if required too.

I guess the worst thing that can happen if not replaced is wear on the hub or geabox output shafts (not likely IMHO) or to lose drive it one goes altogether. This is not the end of the world in an L-Series with part-time 4WD as you can whack it into 4WD and still keep driving with rear wheel drive working. :)

edit: oops, someone said that already, didn't read it before, sorry ;)

This has crossed my mine several times. Spoke to dad about it and he reckons its a CV issue. I'm starting to doubt this as i have heard a ticking (and can feel it in the floor pan) when cruising along a straight section of road. Its gone now but it makes me wonder. When i have the money i'm looking at new shafts, bearings and seals. Might then look at reconditioning the old shafts if possible and have them as spares.

pretty sure u dont need to disconnect the balljoint to take a front cv out. coz i did it this way last week.

my best tip is to put a screwdriver as far into the side of the strut hub as possible when putting it in or out.
