If we all post our knowledge in here of differences within the MY range '79 -84 and MV Brumby up to '94, we might save a few posts and a lot of searching.

Maybe include parts swap between L series and MY

I have found my MY sedan auto FWD radiator is about 50mm longer than my MV 84 Brumby and 92 Brumby radiator.

My 84 Brumby d/r has the smaller diameter clutch, 92 has the bigger.

L series starter fits the MY and is heaps lighter.

QUESTION. are FWD MY hubs and CV shafts same as MY wagons and Brumbys ?

Edit : If it works can someone make it sticky please ? ( done )

I have fitted an L series FWD auto radiator to my Brumby (no motor) with a small persuasion at each bottom corner. Turns out six years later discover it is a longer than L radiator - Vortex !

L uses the same bottom mounts as Brumbys but vice versa so need raised bracket with hole for rubbers to sit on. L rad is not as high as MY so bracket below is raised a bit.

Anyone found a hose to use L radiator with EA81 motor in MY?

L series and MY 4WD front CV differences. The inner DOJ is the same, the outer CV and shaft not interchangeable, unless you do what Bluesteel and Brumberty etc have done...with common inner, L series shaft, MY outer, modded radius rods and tie rod ends and lots of wheel alignments

outer door handles of all MY and Brumby appear to be the same thing, left, right, front or back.

can anyone say if all MY windscreens are the same between Brumby , sedan , and wagon and 2 door coupe? I know coupe doors and Brumby doors are interchangeable and the coupe doors are better because of crash panels inside

I never knew that one...I'd have thought with the ADR's both would have HAD to be sold in Australia with crash panels. Maybe because the Brumby was a different class it got around the ADR requirement. I'll have to have a look at a coupe door now...

Things I found to different:
EA81- early motors were different to '84 onwards,
early had smaller intake manifold diameter, and expect Hitachi carb was smaller in jet size etc, had a couple of kw less than the later ones, heads differed with bigger exhaust valve size.
Also the fuel pump had a ticker type pump in the engine bay, where later ones had it under near the fuel tank. As emission control differed to later ones.

Disk brakes - early MY ones were solid disks, where later were vented disks and were 5mm bigger in diameter.

Better stater motors were the auto ones as they were reduction drive ones, I think.

Early MY's had a remote voltage regulator to the alternator, where the later is like all current design were the rectifier/regulator is combined at the alternator.

Might think of something else later.

makes me think...The MY auto FWD had reduction drive on it, just thought it was an L starter, given it was owned by an engine installer. It was engine number three , at least, in 180,000 clicks. Have a receipt for 1 engine fit, engine installer did another. The block has no plug in water jacket next to gudgeon hole for number 1

alright ! I am sticky !!

MY starter motors : beginning to think the manuals got heavy ones and autos got the lighter L series style

On my custom control arm stuff in my Brumby I has to use EA82 shafts for their length. They bolted right into my hubs no problems and connected to the trans even easier. On a stock EA81 yes they will be too long, but the CV and it's shaft (the one going through the hub) are the same as the EA81 ones.

I believe in 85 all EA81's got hydraulic lifters, so 85+ Brumby's.
I think in 84 they brought out the vented front disc brakes too. Did't the bigger (same as L series) clutch come out with the 84's as well?

Coupe and brumby doors are interchangeable. The glass isn't.

My Subaru dealer spares guy says no hydraulic lifter EA81's were in cars sold by Subaru in this country - to explain the no listng of spare hydraulic lifters.

I have found L series HUBS front 4WD are wider between where the inner and outer bearings sit, than 4WD MV Brumby

Its just a bigger bar - the coupe door would need one as the rear pillar is further away from the door than the brumby's counter part.

The brumby door still has one but is smaller in width.

a lame addition here , but i have just found the oil fill pipes can be different in that some (possibly mid to late 80's) reach further towards the spare carrier and my 92 clears it by heaps (possibly the ones with the air pollution egr fitting from exhaust header to air filter crap)

engine oil dipsticks are ea81 ea82 specific

looks like pistons and conrods are shared between the two, EA81 and EA82

heres one i did a couple of years ago that turned a lot of heads. 1980 leone sedan honestly to my knowledge only ever came out two wheel drive, (feel free to corect me if i"m wrong) three very simple mods to do a 4WD convertion. first is the rear cross member holding the fuel tank in. move it toward the rear of the car about 4 inchs, allowing the 4wd tank to fit. two, make or take from a donor car the tunnel mount for the 4wd selector, and three take all the running gear out of that donor car and bolt it straight in. these cars are so interchangable its not funny and as far as most poeple are concerned most or all subys were 4wd so no-one will ever be the wiser. and they seem to be a lot more fun than the wagons.

How do you tell the difference between the MY and L series?
My 84 Brumby certainly has vented discs.

I can't believe the amount of differences between them all. Finding parts is a nightmare!

82 I think was the last year for non-vented discs...

1983 doors are slightly different to the 1982 and earlier M.Y's. They still use the same hinges and work the same, just the door mirrors are different.
