Bent Tie,radius rod and stabiliser bar

Post by Milla » Tue Sep 11, 2007 10:05 pm

Big problems with the front right of the car.
Lookin from the ride side of the car the front tyre sit approx 2" closer to the rear of the car than it should.
Upon inspection i think the radius rod and stabilser bar are bent. the radius on about a 120 degree angle pulling the car towards the righthand side of the road.

Q's
Can i just take out the radius rod and bend it back into shape or do i need a new control arm and rod and the rest of the kit.

If so how much would this kind of set up cost approx at a wreckers.

P.S if anyone can help this wkend i would be most greatful as i am suppose to drive up to exmouth on the 22nd ( at least a carton)

Have u been to the pines??? LOL

Best bet would be to get 2nd hand replacement parts... although some of the old school guys may remember Jaffa doing the same thing in his L on the power lines track. He straightened his on the day on the side of the track and is still running it in his car. So it can be done but i wouldn't recomend it.

hmmm they dont jsut bend for no reason so did u hit something??

i not sure on Lseries but if its bent the radius rods it wuld have most likely bent the control arm to so rebending the rod back into shape may fix that but ull still have a bent control arm.
best thing to do wuld be go and source out some nice straight ones from Wreckers and install them both at same time.
shuldnt be to hard and sum1 might even lend u a hand

wt suburb u in?

definitely wuldnt pay over $50 at wreckers (maybe thats way to high aswell :???:)

edit - wts a stabiliser bar ?????

yeah just get some secondhand replacements, should be less than 50 bucks. Have a look in the quokka for people wrecking L series. Very quick to remove and replace these.

Stabiliser bar I think maybe referring to the front sway bar.

stabilser/sway same thing i think too just goin off the gregory's book. i dont think the control arm is bent, mainly the radius rod.. bent like this..... <.......
can i just take the rod off and replace or is it an assembly thing. coz takin the whole right control arm and rods and bars off could be a task.
PS. im in bentley, just behind curtain on the manning road side.

yeah you can take the radius rod off by itself. 3 nuts hold it on....one up near firewall, into the radius rod bracket. and two under the control arm.

The two nuts under the control arm can be difficult to remove. I'd recommend using a breaker bar and a hex socket for this as they can round easily otherwise. They will likely be very tight if they havn't been removed in a long time.

If the radius rod is clearly bent then the control arm will be twisted slightly, not a prob but expect it to be fiddly to get the straight radius rod in...
Most of us have been there at some stage
