engine management problem?

I have a Subaru Liberty '93 2.2 wagon and I am experiencing intermittent engine power loss.Specifically driving up a long hill and once whilst overtaking the vehicle drops power to a crawl.Turn off the engine for 5 minutes and "bingo" no problem until next time, maybe not for another week or two. I have cleaned the throttle body and replaced the fuel filter, spoken to service manager but there was no joy there. They suggested that even if I took it in to them that an intermittent problem may not be detectable.Has anyone out there experienced this,or heard of this and can offer me some constructive advice?Needless to say I would be extremely appreciative.

I would check if the ECU is displaying any engine codes. Is your "check engine" light comming on whilst driving?

Do you know how to check for codes?

There are 2 green connectors under the dash and you can read fault codes

There is a list of codes and how to read them somewhere on the board

My guess is one of the sensors, O2 or Air Flo. Had a similar fault and it was the O2 sensor on the Catalitic Converter.

thanks for the help

I finally took my daughter's Subaru to a autoelectrician-mate and he ran the code & it came up as throttle position sensor. Now I am after the part and was told it could be very expensive so I have been trying to find alternative sources and again would appreciate any help with this I live on the Central coast of NSW.

Mate give me a call. Im up the coast in Newie.
I know exactly the problem as ive fixed a few.Im not going to type away as it is easyer to talk over the phone but i will say forget about the ecu/spark issues as it has to do with oil pressure. Ph 49612154 work hours.
Thanks Marshy

Oil pressure? Sounds interesting. Let us know more please.

We have seen a few with similar problems. We didn't manage to fix it until we replaced the fuel pressure reg and fuel pump.

The ones we fixed would drive normally until you had to use power for a while. Then they would pretty much die in the arse. Often they would sit on the side of the road spluttering and coughing. Turn them off and restart and they would be fine.

This problem can be replicated by driving in higher revs, braking , then loading it up.
You have to be quite harsh on the engine but the missing will occur. You will notice that if it stalls and you crank engine straight away the engine can sound like theres no or lacking of compression as the engine spins without the contant beat. What basically happens is the oil pressure builds and holds the lifters rock solid thus holding the valves open= no compression.
You would swear that its a spark issue but when you look closer its compression.
Moments after its stalls or runs rough oil pressure drops and the idle slowly comes back.

Dude... guru on information.... would you see this with an oil pressure guage? like it would be abnormally high correct?
