Help!!! Blown Diff, 89 Sub L-Series 2x Range Trans

Can any body point me in the right direction here? I think I've got a blown diff or something in the transmission of my 89 Lseries touring wagon. I need to get it back on the road fast.

...After that I've got a second hand lift kit waiting to be installed, so a bigger engine might be the go. Any thoughts about transmission and diff solutions? I am a newbie to mods!!

Front or back??

Probably try your local subaru wreckers.

where abouts are you?
if its a blown diff that fairly easy to repair- just make sure you pick up the right ratio replacement (usually says either 3.7 or 3.9) on the back of diff.

blown gearbox may cause you a bit more hassle for a replacemnt

I live in Busselton WA!
I originally thought it was a noisy RH CV joint...until we noticed an unnatural pivoting action (RHS) at the trans output. All was confirmed when I backed the bus out of the drive for a test drive. BANG! Crunch!!...push it back in!!

Trans output? So this is the front diff you are talking about? ie the gearbox?
If it's pivoting at a funny angle then you might have just snapped the stub axel so there is a chance maybe you can just replace this...

I take it this means remove the gearbox? Perfect time to fit the lift kit!...Do I need to get the gearbox open?

possibly the cv joint is broken underneath the boot so its not visible and hence the unnatural pivoting. so is it on the front cv coming out from the gearbox or the rear diff?
btw removing the gearbox wont make installing a lift kit easier.

I had only just replaced the RHS CV shaft (bought from AUST CV centre)and was about to test when the said movement made itself apparent.

I realise the difficulty of installing a lift kit, but will it make replacing a gearbox any easier?

P.S.Does anybody know any good sources for a gearbox (and diff) suitable for 14 inch rims?

Would you believe you guys were on the right track... The inner DOJ was just too big. (Hard to check in the dark!!) so the "BangCRUNCH" was the sound of the pin shearing and getting dragged around splines. Will have to wait till Monday to see if I can get the right shaft.

Same problem here...any answer please

Large clunk sound when turning in 4wd.
Front diff/gearbox knocking noise in 2wd and box in neutral.
Have drive in 4wd to rear wheels, and front less noisey. Is this the crown wheel? or just broken mounts?

What is DOJ? By Double Offset Joint do you mean the CV??

Why does engaging 4wd make it less noisey? Is that to do with a baring somewhere?

Also can't find service manual for gearbox, does any one have a link to a pdf, or similar.

Cheers
