The gearset is simple enough if you have done trans work before.
You need to have both boxes together to make life easier for a first timer.

The mounts look similar but have a different bolt pattern so you would need to drill a few holes in your crossmember to accomodate the VTD mount.

here are the pictures, Grant.
I may be able to supply the setup, if you can't buy one locally. You need to change all the gears in the extension housing, including the one off the main shaft. No big deal.

Re 99 on boxes. There are still VTD and non VTD boxes. Only WRX and TT autos have VTD(TT also has tiptronic which is a different valve body and extra solenoid). Aus GT fozza's don't have VTD which is strange seeing as it is sort of an offroad vehicle. The later NA tranfers still work very well though, gen 1's were the only real problem cars.
see bold point.

when did they start using this and how was it implented?

I've seen a few of those tiptronics on ebay from time to time. I've often had thoughts of wiring it up as a sequential like in the WRC cars.... :?

what do I need to look for on the box to verify this.

What's the code on the box?

The box will be a 98 on design so will be 8 bolt bellhousing and will have a blanked off oil filter fitting on the passenger side.

No tiptronic in gen 2 cars.
Gearbox code is above the starter on bellhousing but you will not see it if it is a twin turbo.

ok... was reading through this thread and got lost and confused...

I have an ej20t with an 4eat auto from a JDM Legacy Turbo... how do I lock it into 50/50? +12V to C or 0V to C? :)

also, I don't get any fault codes (besides the spd sensor 2) and my car recenlty starded to shift strangely... it shifts from 1st to 2nd only at high rpm or if I play with the pedal a bit and there is very litle torque and it's like it sometimes let's go when I floor it at speed... if I floor it from the start then the shift from 1st to 2nd seems fine and it never slips all the way to full speed... :?
