Ea82 wont idle???
Ea82 wont idle???
89 Ea82 carby 4wd wagon.
Accelerates fine on all cylinders but wont idle...
Checked:
all vac lines/fittings (disconnected and blocked).
Idle jet at bottom of carb bowl.
Carb gaskets.
Timing.
Carb wiring to idle cut solenoid etc.
What else could cause the motor to hunt and die at idle???
Is there an easy way to check if the carb is flooding/starving for fuel? Fuel was coming out in little blobs and didnt sound right...
Ive bumped up the idle screw for now but it still struggles to idle.
I also tried listening for leaks with a small hose to no avail...
Help.

get someone to startup or rev up the engine while you pour fuel in the carby trying to idle the engine while you pour in - then you will know you have idle problem or blocked flow..
Cheers

thanks for the replys.
It just started out of the blue. Slowing down one night to turn right, foot on the clutch and brake to go from third back to second, dash lights came on and engine stalled. Been happening ever since.
Thought fuel pump but pulled fuel supply hose from carby and started engine. It pumped a cup of fuel into an icecream container in seconds. Plenty of flow it seems.
Thinking of grabbing another carb from the wreckers and putting it on just to cancel that out. It seems so much like a vacuum leak tho but ill b stuffed if i could find it...
keep the ideas coming. Cheers guys.

i disconnected each vacuum point at the inlet manifold one at a time (and in groups for that matter) to see if any of the hoses or fittings were split/leaking etc. They were all reconnected eventually with no change to the idle. I am 99% sure that they are not causing the problem unless there is some obscure one i missed...

Try a 'Mexican tune up'
swap HT leads on the RHS of the motor, remove air cleaner lid.
Start car, will run but rough, keep revs up & make it backfire through the carby a few times.
Crude I know, but works a treat out bush if you sucked in too much sand and the idle jet is blocked. Be wary of the wrecker carby swap - many variants in carbies, vacum lines etc, plus most of them may have been sitting around too long.
Have it rebuilt, and run on PULP

i must have scared the old sooby today or something cos hows this;
Drove it down to u-pullit wreckers (39deg today) giving it a bit more revs than normal (accel and decel) to get another carby.
Pulled up in their carpark, clutch in and waited for the revs to drop and die but guess what?
She's back to normal idling!
I could tell immediately as it was idling high (remember i turned the idle up just to make it idle rough) and smoothly, with the aircon on aswell.
All i can put it down to is a slight blockage in the carb which freed itself with the hot weather and a bit of driving.
Thanks all for your reply's. I still grabbed a spare carb for next time too but hopefully there wont be one.
p.s. tried the 'mexican tune up' in the driveway prior to going down there too, it back fired a couple times but didnt change the idle at all. Was only when i got down to the wreckers 30mins later, but you never know it may have loosened something... Cheers,
Nick.

Hey SSS1600 . Did this problem ever re-occur for you.
Exact same thing has happened to me and it came good after i gave it some herbs.
Then a week later it has started playing up again today and wont idle at all now. Whats odd is i did stop at one set of traffic lights and it would idle fine but i havent had it idling again since.
Regards,
Gary
