Which Starter for a conversion?

Post by dwayneb » Thu Apr 16, 2009 1:17 pm

Fires up perfectly when cold, however if I have been running around making a lot of stops, it just gets harder to turn over, (but still will - just).

My current starter is drawing a lot of battery power when the engine is warm.

I have put a relay in line to give it a bit more power.

Which starter motor is used for a converted brumby.

Engine is an EJ22, gearbox is a 5 speed part time from a L series.

Will a standard L work, or bite the bullett and get a Liberty one.

Thanks for your replies.

Try and hunt down an automatic starter from an L series, they swap straight over but are a reduction drive like the liberty ones

measure the voltage at the solenoid control wire (the wire from your ignition barrel) during cranking. If its down you need to find out whre the voltage is being dropped.

If you can use the Auto L starter on the EJ, can the manual L series starter be used on the EJ flywheel?

Most ppl I know have just used standard L or MY starters in this situation without really any issue. Wackybug uses an old MY one and she starts great every time.
Benny if he's running an EA82 gearbox he'd also be using the matching flywheel.
A reduction drive EJ starter will be better I suppose but like I say, any old EA one should be fine.
It's possible your starter might just be cactus, try swapping another EA one in first, you should be able to swap a 6pack for one :) But definitely do as Vincent suggests before anything.
