Yeah, just near the crank angle sensor there will be a mark on the metal for the crank alignment - for the cams its on the blak cam cover at 12 o'clock.

Ok we have managed to get it all off just bought a rattle gun and with the puller got the crankpulley off. The timing belt looks almost new gone over it two or three times no cracks no chips or anything!

Ok now we are up to the cam shaft seals how the hell do you get them out? Please tell me you dont need to take the whole cam shaft out?

AndrewT wrote:That photo I'd say they have still used the gaskets, but just been quite over-zealous with the use of the goo. You actually are still supposed to use the goo with the Subaru rocker cover gaskets but only small amounts in the corners and around the little half-moon things.

**edit - lol there's been about 7 posts since I started writing that (had to go get the phone).

Also to crack the crank bolt, you can also construct a tool for this if you are keen. Get a metal ring and weld some posts to it which line up with the holes towards the outer edge of the crank pulley so it can "grab" on. Then weld a long breaker bar to the ring but not across the centre of it. Then you can use the breaker bar to hold the crank still, and still put a socket through the middle of the ring and use another breaker bar on that to undo the bolt. I borrowed one off somebody who made it and it was absolutely the easiest thing to do!
Thanks AndrewT, yeah the thread is becoming about something other than oil leaks.

So I did another look, and scraped a bit of goo away from the top side,
sure enough I can see what is the gasket.
I think half the trouble is I don't have a proper tool to tighten the bottom bolts, 1/2" socket tools just don't fit, need to invest in 3/8" they should squeeze in there?

Q. Is the area behind the rocker cover floating in oil normally ?
just wondering what possible problems there might be otherwise,
cylinder head and camshaft exploded view only shows (7) a plug at the rear, no seal?

Front cam shaft seals? Theres a set of pick tools you can buy, one peice is
shaped like a hook, I believe that is what you use to pick the seal out,
never done it myself yet though.
Then you need a suitably sized steel ring to push the new one in.

If you're after pics of EJ oil seals/gearbox stuff etc check out my thread in the restorations area - Bennie's EJ conversion into Ruby Scoo... The stuff I've talked about starts at post #60, with most relevant stuff at #66 and after.

Also, I use a small flat head screw driver to get the seals out - you destroy them in the process and have to be careful not to scratch any of the sealing surfaces of the metal, its worked for me everytime so far.

Cheers

Seems like a couple of litres a month (depending on kms travelled of course... over say 1000kms)

I would find out why its leaking or using oil - shouldnt be doing that...

For my EJ22 at 298,000kms it only uses approx 500ml of oil per 7500 kms which is pretty good.
