Upper engine cleaner
Have used a 12v led test light to test for signal to the fuel injectors and all injectors have signal. have tested all coils and plugs and coils by removing one by one and grounding them on the head while the wife turns the key and all the plugs are firing. I have even squirted some fuel down a vacume hosein case there was a block in the fuel rail becouse it is coming out at quite a rate from thefilter whena hose is removed.
What info I am after is if any one has heard of upper engine cleaner breaking big chunks of carbon off and causing damage to the combustion chamber, because short of that I am out of ideas as to why it wont start

MSG. Two major things stop a car starting.
1 Too rich. Do you get black smoke exhaust (rich)? or blue grey smoke (oil)? Spark plug fouling is either too rich or too much oil (poor piston ring sealing) As you have fouling in two cylinders this points to a problem with those cylinders, but should not stop starting.
2. Ignition. Assuming the computer has timing right the spark can be deceiving. Sometimes the spark is seen but is too weak. Are you able to borrow another coil for testing? Also are the spark plug gaps correct approx 1 mm.
I and others have had a difficult to find problem. It turned out to be the coil.
Re upper engine. I regularly use Morey's Upper Cylinder lubricant. It lubricates components, removes carbon and then keeps the upper engine clean. Suggest you consider this option every time you fill the tank ( just add to the fuel). I buy it from Repco.

The love affair with upper engine cleaner is back on. picked up the car from the mechanics, running like a dream again. The problem turned out to be that the cam angle senser bolt had started to come loose some time ago, when the bolt finally came out and the sensor moved the car would not start.
But the good news is when the car went onto the dyno the only problem found was a stuffed o2 senser that was causing the bad fuel econermy 11 to 11.5 l/100kms, But after nearly 300000kms the old girl still has 137kw at the wheels no probs. time to go for a nice long drive

Gd to hear all turned out ok and that the Upper engine cleaner is not at fault. I've got 5 ej22 one ea81 and one ej20t that are all getting the treatment when i get back:D hehe

I used to use Morey's in my old VL Commodore and it lasted until 387,000 odd Kms and ran like a clock. The head did crack at around 270,000 odd Kms, my mechanic got an exchange head from Heads Australia in Melb. and it just kept on going after that, however, he did comment on how clean the valves etc were for an engine that had that many Kms up on it.davmax wrote:Re upper engine. I have also used Morey's in my Forester too, but since getting my hands on about 6 cans of the Subaru Upper Cylinder Cleaner I use that instead and still the Morey's on standby if need be.

Its not that bad...
I remembered I had high mileage car and was using oil etc, squired carby cleaning in the throttle while revving around 2000 rpm and sh¡t there was that much smoke in my neighbourhood and I was laughing my arse off and almost everyone came to see what I was doing... lol

hehe...similar happened to me in the past, ran a quart of atf down the carb of a ford 302 v8 at high rpms trying to loosen up the rings.AlpineRaven wrote:LoL

I wouldnt have a clue... ive always used same amount in carby engines same with EFI... maybe brittle hoses?phantomD wrote:Apologies for the thread revival.
What are the dangers of this treatment especially with older engines? I've been told only to use 1/3 a can initially not 1/2.
For EA81 you just take apart the air filter and spray it down the carby, correct?

Appears this Sub stuff is foam, expanding? so if you spray down throttle of carby....instructions say get to op temp, STOP engine, spray half a can ( it is a tin with no level gauge, maybe use scale to measure an empty first to determine half???) into a vacuum source or do the PVC hose extension through a held open throttle of carby - poke it to the left spray quarter, poke it to the rrrrright spray another quarter. Wait the five mins it says to, run car blow junk out. The remiander is said ti be sprayed in while running
ok guys i have used it on the fori .was suby stuf and even della gould feal the diference and shes blond.
has anyone thought of using water injection.my old man used to run it and in his f100 ford orange pulled of one of the heads(dont recal y) and wanted to know haow long ago did the motor get rebuilt as it was spotless inside.
as can be seen with a blown head gasket into the water gally the cilinder isclean .
he had the cheaper one worked by vacuum and a little tap but there are dearer ons on the market. the only thing he used to say was carry clean water cause dirty water could block the jet.
