fitting ej207 + 6speed box to l-series

i understand this hasnt really been done before and i'll probably be one of the first to do it if its suitable.

I understand all the major things about the conversion, with the engine xmember etc etc, and a custom gbox xmember, taillshaft etc

My main concern with fitting the sti 6-speed is, will the shifter line up with the l-series shifter position? Will i have any trouble with selecting all the gears?

with the motor ive heard things about how people have struggled with the wiring cos the brant alarm system is so comprehensively wired into the existing loom. Should i just keep the brant alarm system and mount the keypad in the car somewhere?

obviosuly im going to be spending alot of money on this project so im going to do it all properly with no expense spared.

what other issues am i likely to hit?

youll be fine mate!

6 speed shifter stuff lines up pretty much the same as the 5 speed stuff!
i have a 6 speed in a MY98 WRX and no issues at all

is it going to be lifted?
the box is freaking huge, may have some issues in the tunnel area , but nothing a grinder and a welder couldnt sort out...

once again tho.....

yeah i know the box is huge, bloody heavy too...the car wont be lifted, its going to be lowered. I spose lifting it will help with fitting the box, but im not keen on lifting another subaru

Alex.. If you're serious about doing this and are prepared to put the time and money into it, then I'd look at using the floor section (mainly the tunnel) of an Impreza. This would give you the room and the crossmember pickups.

in comparsion to a 4 spd auto how big is this thing?

also the brant unit is seriously hacked into the stock harness - piss it off. its VERY obvious where it is fitted and quite easily removed.

as for the rest of it - I think those had a cable throttle. if not find one that does.

ECU will have the immobiliser (OEM subaru) integrated into it so a reflash will be in order to disable it.
if you do build this thing I would drop the ABS system in as well. in my case with the wagon it really helps slow thing thing down from 100kmh quite well.
now the 85-87 had a small tunnel and the 88-94 had the 4spd option so it was a fair bit bigger.
one of my ideas was to bring in a 88 model 3 door and drop a EJ257 and a 6 spd in it as I figured it would fit better in that year shell than the earlier one.

pin down robin berado of perfourmance motorsport here in brissy as he's dropped a few of these into earlier cars and can probably point you in the right direction bear in mind these units are easily a 4-5 figure sum of money before you start on the car.

the overly exuberant price is the only thing holding me back from the 6-speed. This is originally why i wanted to go auto as i could go for big power and have a fairly strong auto box in comparison to the glass subaru 5-speeds.

Im willing to spend the dollars on this project and im very serious about it. I will look into a impreza floor pan Paul, i can imagine how much easier it would make it with cross members etc etc.

the 4eat (or newer variant) are expensive as hell to fix! just been there and its not an exercise I wish to repeat.

if you can get the two side by side look at the size difference. (I'm interested as well.)

now correct my thinking here but if you graft a tunnel into a L series don't you mess up two seat mounts?

Yes you are correct but if you use the complete floor section then you'll be able to use the Impreza seats

I have someone doing this to a Vortex and would post some pics but he would shot me if I showed anyone before it's finished

It's LOTS of fiddling around but looking almost factory.

Upto the vertical section of the firewall. Cut and overlayed between the 2. I believe he is going to make his own heater box.

had a good look at a 6spd today - looking at both on hoists (4spd auto in mine) I reckon it will fit in a later tunnel.

would like to see what you are doing when the customer allows it.

Sorry Chris.. Is your car a L.Series/Vortex with a 4EAT? if it is then the 6 speed box will go in.

As for the Vortex conversion that my friend is doing.. I'm sure I will be able to get/show pictures once he has everything engineered. He's pretty protective of what he is doing.. I think he doesn't want people doing the same without doing it right.

88 L series wagon - EJ20HD(twin turbo) with a 4EAT behind it. only change for me was the crossmember.

Do you have it lifted? I'm trying to recall what my friend did in his L wagon when he fitted his 6 speed.. I'll call him and let you know shortly

OK.. got the run down.. He fitted the 6 speed to his L without any mods, besides the usual stuff like crossmember, gearshifter, tailshaft and CV shafts (he said his L.Series Turbo shafts are perfect to use). He also mentioned the reason he is changing the floorplan is so that all the 05 STi suspension stuff bolts in (not the tunnel like I thought).
