Noisy Box Question

Post by LRT » Thu Apr 20, 2006 12:00 pm

probably a stupid question like 'how long is a piece of string' but here goes.

I have a 95 Liberty AWD manual with a dual range box - The box has a constant noise/wine that rises with vehicle speed not revs, and doesnt seem to change with differing gears. My question is does anyone have any advice on what this is likely to be (vehicle had 220000ks) - or better still how to track down the problem in the box.

Any constructive advice very welcome.

Cheers

If it changes with speed not revs, she does it in all gears and she is constant wine kinda noise i would be thinking wheel bearings not the gear box. What makes you think box?

Oh and if you are hearing it ALL the time my thoughts are change em sooner rather then later (hard to gauge timeframe - maybe weeks-months depending on how often you drive).

Its not wheel bearings, pretty sure its either box or diff. The noise is...shit how do you spell grrrrrwwwwiiiiiiiiiinnnnnnneee haha and is a pretty constant noise - doesnt change with cornering and there is no lateral mvt in wheels and i know what a bearing and flogged cv sound like.

I dont know g'boxes (obviously) but im thinking it might be a flogged bearing (what is it an end bearing? drive bearing?) at the back of the box. Because the noise rises with speed not revs im thinking its a part of the box (or diff) that turns relative to speed (that probably sounds stupid but i know what i mean). Gear selection is fine.

I have had a vehicle with a farked diff before and it sort of sounds similar but this is quiter at the moment

id be guessing its a diff, if it changes with speed rather than revs

ive had a noisy rear diff for akes, you just get used to it after a while :?

Hope so - will be cheaper when it finally gets sorted.
Whats a second hand jobby worth? or is it better to rebuild

Cheers
