85 L series EA82 Valve clicking

Post by SWAT_Gerbil » Thu Dec 02, 2010 6:39 pm

G'day there,

As you can see from the title, I have a 1985 L series with an EA82 in it and I've got some clicking from the LH head, which I'm pretty certain is the valves, sticky lifters or something. I've had the car for over a year, but only had it registered on the road a short while. Before I had it, it had been sitting for about a year. When I first got it the clicking was really bad, but with a bit of use it stopped. Now it's back again :???:

Now I know my way around a little bit, but I'm no pro mechanic. Can you guys help me out with a few things I could try to help stop the valve noise?

Also, could my L sustain any damage from this clicking over a long period of time?

Thanks,
Tom

PS. Awesome forum, good to see a site devoted to the Subaru in aussie!

nope ticking is pretty normal, search the site and you will find heaps of fixes.

oil pump seals (mickey mouse gasket)
thicker oil/diesel oil

its normally a case of air within the oil by the time it reaches the lifters.

Tom,

Your best bet is to try a product called "lifter free" made by Nulon, might shut it up, and about 1000km later engine oil flush with an oil and filter change, use a genuine oil filter.

Try searches field option on this site using words such as "lash" as in lash adjuster or lifters and you will find a fair bit about the noisy EA82's. The problem can be caused by many issues and subsequently there are a number of remedies to try as suggested. . there has been a lot written in here about it..
