It's definately not the same as the Gen2 EJ25.. I've rebuild many due to head gasket problems and this Gen3 EJ25 is not the same. This Gen3 is a full JDM spec car and it looks like I'll have to contact some Japanese friends.Venom wrote:2002 seems a bit late for a carryover, yet seems more likely than a mystery 2.5 that doesn't appear in any official manuals. If someone could check their engine code on a 2.5 Gen2 then you could atleast rule it out/in.

Looking at the VIN plate, it definitely looks like it is a JDM model and not an export because the VIN starts with the model number (BH9) and there is no JF2 in front of it.
I found a few pages that suggest that the Japanese got an EJ25 with dual overhead cams and AVCS

So where did you find this engine and what are your plans?
I have tried looking for JDM manuals but i cant find anything

Thanks Gannon.. that's a great start.. I know the 1/2 cut is a JDM and can get the VIN of it when I get home.Suparoo wrote:Looking at the VIN plate, it definitely looks like it is a JDM model and not an export because the VIN starts with the model number (BH9) and there is no JF2 in front of it.

Guy's plan's are to fit it into his grey wagon.. see his xmas wish on Hazey's thread

No big sercet.. he got it from me and I won't sell it to anyone else as I promised it to Guy when he returns from his visit to his familyTOONGA wrote:Guy got it from somewhere I would think it will all become apparent when the deal is finalised
if everyone finds out about it then will someone snake the deal
I think they call it free enterprise
amazingly they are the first untranslated pages Ive seen on this car

Another idea would be to get a Japanese repair manual and find a japanese Mechanic in Perth to help out:p

i bought a full gasket set for my ej25 dohc gen2 outback from the USA. it came with 4 rocker cover gaskets. 2 suited my dohc and other 2 didnt. maybe they suit the avcs heads. the kit didnt specify gen2 and i really only bought it for the head gaskets.

"OVERSTEER" is when you hit the fence with the rear of the car.
"HORSEPOWER" is how fast you hit the fence.
"TORQUE" is how far you take the fence with you.

If it works, pull it apart to see why. This is the only reply i got from a member on RSliberty:)
they are pretty much the same wiring except for the extra avcs inlet cam wiring ( cam position sensors, cam oil control solenoids) unfortunately thats all i can offer,
Still searching:S

Guy, How much extra power and torque are you expecting over your existing EJ22?
All the trouble Vidler went through doing practically exactly the same as this (upgrading his EJ22 in his L series to a quad cam EJ25) from memory he admitted it really wasn't worth it. Felt a bit more torque. That was a Gen2 quadcam EJ25 though, maybe this Gen3 one of yours is race spec compared to that I don't know
If you get stuck with the wiring you could just send the harness over to Al at AmAuto, I'm sure he would be able to sort it, give him a call and see if he'll do it and give you a price.
Another avenue might be to use an aftermarket ECU - maybe a map based one which doesn't need the original harness.

Well to tell you the truth the EJ22 on my car rattels, Leaks empty in about 2-3months and is not the best on compression. So my options were to rebuild one or get a newer second hand engine.
So either a newer EJ22 or a EJ20. But then the opportunity came up and that EJ25 was at a very good price. So i jumped on the occasion, thx Paul, and thats about it.
Its not beacause i am expecting 10 times more power, its just i was gonna need a newer engine anyway.
Man its hard to get info on that engine.
Nothing yet!
Anyone found something?

I was told this on USMB:
"Do searches for EJ25D and that should point you in the right direction. Also, look on the wikipedia article for "subaru ej" engine, and see if the "ej25d" matches the year and market for the production of your car."
But when looking at the EJ25d on wikipedia, it says:
"The EJ25D has demonstrated leaking head gasket issues on occasion. There were (at least) two variations of the EJ25D sold in the US market. The engine was introduced in 1996 in the Legacy 2.5GT and LSi and Legacy Outback. That version of the engine used HLA heads, was recommended to be run on 91 octane fuel, had lower power and torque ratings than the later '97-99 EJ25D, and was only offered with an automatic transmission. In 1997 a revised engine was introduced that used heads with shimmed bucket lifters (versus the HLAs), was designed to run on 87 octane fuel, and was available with either a manual or automatic transmission."
Also found The EJ257 thats got the AVCS heads,
"DOHC 16 valve turbo. Originally designed for the North American Impreza STI in 2004 with AVCS and DBW. The same exact shortblock as EJ255 except the EJ255 has a different domed piston vs the EJ257. The heads also have different components. Subaru of America designates the same part numbers for an EJ255 shortblock, and EJ257 shortblock with the exception of the pistons.
* US Market Impreza WRX STi MY04~MY07 (300 hp, 293 hp (New SAE standard))
* US Market Impreza WRX STI MY08~MY10 (305 hp (New SAE standard))
* US Market Subaru Legacy/Subaru Outback MY05~MY06
* Asian, European Market Impreza WRX STi 05~present (280 hp, 40KGh/m)
* JDM Forester STI MY05~present"

Thoughts? Is it the EJ257? only thing is dates and loctaion don't match since the frontcut is from jap, is an outback and is around 2002. And its TURBO.

The EJ25 you are looking for i doubt will be on wikipedia. It was JDM market model only and because most of en.wikipedia is written by english speaking people, there is no information on it.

Thinking outside the box, perhaps you could look into sourcing an aussie engine loom, ecu and ecu loom for an EJ25 quadcam. Might prove easier.

Yes but it would be hard to tell if all the sensors/plugs are the same. plus doesn't the jap stuff inc ECU have a bit more grunt?

Hi guys,
Still nothing interesting was found yet. I'm still looking and can't find much.
Details are:
Outback with ej25 N/A Quad cam.
Model:BH905AE
Engine num:EJ254DXDBE
Chassis num:BH9-061735
AUTO Trans num: TZ1B4ZKDAA
We think its a 01-02 model
The ECU plugs look like this

If anyone can help that would be greatly appreciated. I need the wiring diagram so Dave can cut the loom down. At the moment he is blind and he can't afford to screw up as I won't find another loom easily:( It will just make it much easier for him to cut it down:)
Thx

Hey guys,
So with Paul's intuition we are hoping that the wiring for my engine is that same as the Oz delivered outback and liberty, well hopefully they will have the same colour wires for the tacho and starter and speed sensor.
Anyway would anyone have something to suit the OZ ej25 DOHC that can help Dave figure out the last wires we need to hook up:)
