If this car is a GenIII with a manual gearbox, and the flywheel has not been replaced at an earlier stage, it should have a Dual Mass Flywheel. It is well known for making strange sounds when the clutch is released/engaged

I thought poprock was on the money with the loose spring clips holding the thrust bearing, i had this problem in the past where it only squeaked when the clutch was released/ engaged.

Your best bet is to arm yourself with a spigot bearing, thrust bearing, 2 x thrust bearing clips (they are less than $3 each from Subaru) and a rear engine seal. Even go full hog and replace the dual mass flywheel with a normal one. Pull the engine out and replace everything you can with the engine out. While it is out, give the input shaft a spin and see if its noisy/crunchy/squeaky, if it is, it can be prime suspect. But at least you will know for sure that it isnt anything else, (because they are all new)

I'm finding it hard to believe this has gone to 5 pages.

The gearbox is in neutral.

The noise is a whirring sound.

It's not a rattle, grind, knock, thump, thud, click etc.

Dual mass flywheels are known to make the gearbox rattle not whir.

Can the owner please clarify the noise again?
Regards

Gary ;)

Excellent reading chaps :-)
I'm going with a whirring spigot bearing that is slowing down while coming off load.......

But I'm no mechanic :-)

Baha
Won't be retiring on that sale
I think the offending bearing (the one I'm backing anyway) is about ten bucks from memory ;-)

Good idea Andy, you would have a birdseye view without even to have to touch a spanner. Exploded ASSY diagram + part#s on the screen.

oh for god sake, do u all remember i said i had the engine out not long ago?
and when i did, i checked the throwout bearing and the input shaft did rattle a bit, the first clue of a input shaft bearing failure.
its not a dual mas flywheel, it's one peice i know what they look like!
the noise is slightly dampened when u select low range!!
its the Frikn gearbox allright!
christ, the spigot bearing and thrust bearing do absolutely nothign, NOTHING when the clutch is fully released. NOTHIGN AT ALL!!!
LEARN THIS NOW and never make the mistake again!!! im ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN OF THIS!!!
ARRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGh
Sorry i actualy mean no offence to anyone, u are all trying to help, thats what us aussies do, we share our brains, but let me share mine wtih u all, a fully released clutch, is designed to operate with no moving parts!!
why would car manufacturers design somethign fragile that moves 99.99999% of the time u drive!

Then FFS stop arguing on the internet and go and rebuild your gearbox.

(Only the true God deserves capital letters.) Did as suggested and re-read the original post. Rebuilder said that he was convinced that the fault was in the gearbox. Recall an old saying: " a man convinced against his will is of the same opinion still ". Ho hum; time for my morning nap:p
