Stroking an EJ?

Post by 2nd Hand Yank » Thu Mar 08, 2012 6:28 am

Is is possible?
I'm wondering how much they can have their stroke length increased.
"Matt" in Townsville claims to have stroked his EA81 and it was easy. :-D

I did the math and found an EJ22 would be 2.5L by changing the stroke from 75mm to 85 mm.

Likely this modification would affect compression ratios too without major piston mods...
I wouldn't mind a 2.5L EJ22 that needs 98 octane because of a 10.5/11-to-1 compression ratio. (torque? *drool*)

I'm not serious about this yet.
I just thought it'd be an interesting discussion topic.

cosworth and tomei and a couple other places make them.
I think they are mainly for turbo 22's though.

maybe a stroked 22 with a raptor supercharger

Very nice, Im sure with the right pistons you could make an N/A stroker with those parts.

I don't suppose theree was a price for that kit? I'm guessing around the 3 grand mark before shipping.

The cheaper way of doing it would be to source an ej25 short block and put the 2.2 heads and inlet manifold on as they all bolt up with a little work on the head gaskets as the coolant channels don't quite line up. Called a high compression frankenmotor, there's a lot about it on the american subaru forums. Apparently the 2.2 heads are quite restrictive but its a cheap power increase if you already have an ej22, as the wiring then plugs straight into the existing 2.2 harness.

Are you thinking about this for your l-series? wouldn't it be easier to do the ej25 conversion in the first place?

There is little point increasing the stroke that far when a factory 2.5 was made using less stroke and more bore

EJ20
Displacement: 1994 cc
Bore: 92.0 mm
Stroke: 75.0 mm

EJ22
Displacement: 2212 cc
Bore: 96.9 mm
Stroke: 75.0 mm

EJ25
Displacement: 2457 cc
Bore: 99.5 mm
Stroke: 79.0 mm

FB20
Displacement: 1995 cc
Bore: 84 mm
Stroke: 90 mm

FB25
Displacement: 2498 cc
Bore: 94 mm
Stroke: 90 mm

Interestingly, a member of RSLC bored and stroked an EJ22 and came up with 2.7L, but his results were never claimed.

If you really wanted a project, get a reasonably new EJ25 with AVCS and plastic intake manifold, bore and stroke it as much as you can.

is it really worth stroking a n/a motor when a turbo would be cheaper, more reliable and more powerful? Heck, a gen3 H6 would probably be cheaper...

ive heard of many ej20 turbos stroked out to 2.2/2.3l.

2000 gen3 outback, lifted, otherwise stock.

Would that fit in an L Series?

With alot of work, plus you would need a whole new drive train, gearbox, diff, etc..
Its is possible though.

Dunno about a whole new drive train - Venom's running an EA gearbox behind his H6, it's the EA AWD with locking centre diff cased with EJ dual range casings.

The issue would be the radiator as the L series engine bay isn't as long as that of the liberty or forester...
