Help: 1990 GX Wagon Gearbox

Post by Tnate » Mon Oct 24, 2005 1:53 pm

1990 GX Wagon, Selectable AWD, 5 gears

The above mentioned car has just lost 4th gear, and also the clutch feels "grainy" when using. Also, the gear shift knob moves a considerable amount when accelerating, and backing off (about 2 inches of movement)

When driving, if I select 4th, and release the clutch, there is nothing happening except for a slight grinding noise. It doesn't feel like there is a 4th gear.
All other gears seem fine.

The clutch was replaced quite recently.

Does this sound like it requires a total rebuild, or just one gear replaced?
I cant really afford a whole rebuild or tranmission, so have just been going from 3rd to 5th.

Please help

This sounds like you may have a broken gearbox mount and possibly engine mount.Th 4th gear problem may be that it isnt actually pushing the selector in far enough, do you have any problem when selecting 2nd.

No, second gear goes in fine. I can select 4th (as in put the selector in the position), but when I release the clutch, just get a slight whirring type sound.

Does this mean it could still be the mounts, or would second have gone too?

Thanks for the help
