EA81 Oil pump issues

Post by guyph_01 » Sat Jun 23, 2012 9:26 pm

/hey guys,

So i replaced the gasket on a ea81 for a friend as it was leaking really bad. Now its not leaking but is making this crazy crunching noise when its running. LOL
what could be the cause of this. Its dark now and i'll pullit out tomorrow.
Any ideas?

Say i didn't align the keyway properly, Would i still be able to screw the pump flush on the block, Would the key way push internals parts inside??

Anyway, We also found out that the underside of the cap was milky, So the engine is terminal. We used some chemi weld to get a few more k's out of it before we got a new engine. Hopefully i didn't F%&k it up before it terminal date:p

I'll find out tomorrow.
Thx

I wonder if yas have cracked the pump housing, or it was cracked and not noticed the crack may have opened up when disturbed, now the pump may rattle in the housing.
By Replacing the gasket I assume you mean the paper one.
The "O" rings should be replaced at the same time cause the rubber goes hard and is not likley to seal once disturbed.
Milky on the cap doesen't mean to much just yet, could be just condensation, what colour is the oil.

Years ago when my EA81 started leading oil from the pump I noticed the pump housing was cracked. Realising cracking this thing was fairly easy to do I went up to the wreckers to get another one. I insisted they get the pump out for me in case I stuffed it up and sure enough they cracked 2 pumps getting them out before managing to do it properly. That was over 10 years ago and that pump is still in the car now with no issues. All this may not explain why your pump is noisy but I can state they are easy to crack.

Gees, i have a pump that I hope I never have to pull out again or the O ring rots enough for me to get it out again in one piece. It was a gentl big rubber hammer tap that got it home :D

Hi guys,

thx for the input. Ok well didn't really see a crack on there.
I did replace the o rings with aftermarket ones. For some reason the one i had put in there may have been too big 'think'!!! when i removed the pump i saw the the seal had been damaged on the out edge. So i went back to the store and got one but was really slightly thinker than the part. went in easy and the noise was gone.

No idea how a seal could cause crunching noise, i mean real bad crunching noise.

Anyway its all gd now.
Btw i definitely think he ****ed the engine as he kept driving and driving it hot just because one of the back heater metal pipes on the engine had rusted and was leaking bad.

Oh well, Poor suby.

I'm about to do the same thing with Sunnie the Brumby. Last time I did it I only did the gasket and not the O rings as I didn't realise there was another set of "sandwich plates" where the pump internals hide - I didn't really think about it at the time to be honest, just wanted the bloody thing in and leak free - which it wasn't

Now I've got a kit waiting to go in :D This week's task - one of anyway.

Cheers

The little ute has been running everyday since the weekend, My mate works as a "landscaper Bla Bla" some fancy title, I just called him the Gardener lol, But yeah not one wired sound since i put in the smaller seal. Still can't figure out how the larger seal cause that horrible crunching noise...

Well I've done the oil pump on Sunnie the brumby - no broken plates etc and the re-seal kit went in very well (thanks FROG!).

Now to wait until I can start him up again and see what happens - hopefully no leaks!

Cheers

I'm guessing something didn't go back together to well. I would remove and inspect or replace if you have another one. I'd also read the manual on rebuilding them as clearances are very important.

Sorry I must have miss read the first post.

After reading post #6 I see it you had removed it again and replaced it with a smaller o'ring. I'm going to go out on a limb here and say it wasn't sitting in the block correctly.

Again I say it's all about clearances with oil pumps, so for others that view this thread in the future, best to use ONLY genuine seals (that includes o'rings).

yep, ture and i'm pretty sure they are quite cheap even genuine. Only thing was we did it on the weekend and the Subaru dealership was closed and he needed his car for Monday so we had to use crap after market parts.

NOTE: If it was my car i would have use genuine parts like i always do:) sepcially for seals:p hahahaha
