So is it a dual range foz tranny or are we not allowed to know about the specs until you've got it in your subi and have "tested" it out??

If you've got to split the box to drop the 4.11 diff (that's what you're running now isn't it??) in, you might as well go the whole hog and throw the L series low range in there too :twisted:
There are threads about how to do it on here, I remember PeeJay wrote up a good one to do with his forester gearbox, there was a bit in there about some input shaft thing that needed to be modified too, I don't know if this will be applicable to what your gearbox needs but it's good to read up on it anyway.
You'll also have to shave the Ring gear so it clears the low range gearing ;)

Right on! Yeah while the L-series low would be sweet, I've researched it to death and found your gen 1 fozzie's had a pretty good low with 4.11s, so bolt-on goodness. I liked the idea that I wouldn't have to open the thing and meddle with innerds. I now understand better what to do with the L-series low swap and ring gear shaving (for 4.11s), now that I've opened my old 5MT...
the L-series low also seems to make sense after reading a bunch of threads, seeing inside mine and other photos from a guy on the east coast here that got a built box from a company Down Under (I wrote about them before, but I forget the name...I think you've got a buddy working with them Bennie)

Anyhoo, All systems point to this gearbox being a 4.11 axle ratio with 1.44:1 low EJ 5MT, and that'll be confirmed when I put it in and test it out. But Taza indicated it's from a NA 99 fozz dual range. He gave me the VIN and tranny codes (which I cross-checked as best I could) for it.

So it's a 1st gen dual range foz box from a mom car with low KMs. Not romped or "worked" off road like all of us would do to a fozz ;)

So yeah, not a secret, but I certainly look forward to getting it done. testing it out and reporting back with my ear-to-ear grin :D

You are the first one here for me to notice to have made a gearbox cradle to support it while it is in pieces, just like th factory manuals. I must make one someday and bust one open sometime -( and put it back together :D )

Yeah, the one I cracked open hasn't gone back together yet, 6 or so months later :lol:

really, truly now, my DR EJ 5MT should begin it's journey over the pond Monday, I'm assured. ;)

it'll be nice to get my car back on the road, I'm like 2 months out now, but there's some other stuff that needs to happen besides a gearbox swap, but it doesn't make sense to start that stuff until I know the transmission is en route or here.

Maybe before you El Freddo, and in the nicest way hopefully . . .

Its just extra rough when its so far out of my hands on relying on someone else...

It has been like 3 months delayed, but Taza assures me things are rollin' and I think we've got it all sorted out, especially around everyone's busy schedules and lives.

THIS time, I am confidant the gearbox REALLY is on the boat and en route to Utah!

I've committed to the other significant repairs (timing, water pump and some resealing) and it seems like things might be working out such that it'll go in the car after all...


timing kit, water pump, and some resealing (valve covers, cams, mains, oil pan), and maybe a sweet transmission swap!

how good is the gen 2 Tom, may keep mine plant the ez into it with a duel range box. I like the bumper

you should of shipped a few duel range boxes. I have a pallet full of them :)

Its in its done, its awesome and I express thanks to Taza for helping bring this into reality. it was nearly nine years inthe dreaming, over 3 years in the working and a year in the effort and waiting.



I just compiled this thread over the past hour+ (while my 10 month old was napping) so sorry to redirect and be short by not retyping or copy-pasting here in a unique report, and I know you all deserve that respect ;) BUT I'm just going to tack the link in here.

Long story short I wheeled my (well and tastefully modified) 95 legacy with two 4" lifted FJ80s and a 3" lifted FJ cruiser, tackling Lockhart Basin ( north to south) IN A DAY!!
