I like the use of the turbo manifold on backwards to point the exhaust in a useful direction. Can you work out the manifolds on top of the heads on the EJ20 in the background?

Yes it looked like a very neat setup with the twin webers.
I was temped in joining to drop Toonga's build thread on there to "enlighten" them. Then add a bit about the wiring cut down that they seem to have some issues with. Kinda funny to read in a way. Those that are really passionate about the air cooled gear seem to be hanging on to the old times so to speak.
Cheers

I was tempted to join and ask them what they think of the megajolt ECU system. for 3-400 dollars (ECU and scrounged bits) it looks to be an acceptable way to circumvent the need for a distributor (sacrilege he says) on an EJ motor. As well it is programmable via a computer a laptop running Win98?
Anyone ?
EDIT the same Vdub running

I think the Megajolt is only an ignition controller not a ECU, the megasquirt does both

But if you read the article he was running the ignition only with the megajolt

Im asking ( I suppose I should have made it clear sorry) if anyone has used one to run ignition only to replace a distributor.TOONGA wrote: it looks to be an acceptable way to circumvent the need for a distributor (sacrilege he says) on an EJ motor.
If I was going to use MPFI on an EJ I would use a subaru ECU as it is built for the job

There was more than one manufacturer surely, that had an electronic thing plugged into the hole where a dizzy wasa in previous models. Thinking Ford EF I6 with a unit plugged on the block at dizzy hole, they reverted to one coil & a dizzy with the following model EL as a cost saving measure i think.
Are you thinking aftermarket or use some componentry off a four cylinder to smack on the back of the head ?
I looked at your link (unlike someone else
) I remember someone selling me the idea of this similar set up years ago to get the best out of any old carbed engine - looks promising
Aw, did I see this trigger ring on the EJ in the beetle ??
Now...remembering RatCamper from Finley NSW was in and out of here on his quest for perfection thinking of an EDIS on his EA81 powered Chookpen - may be some info in his posts Jules??

But that exhaust! Namely the muffler/exhaust poking out the back and to the side.Gannon wrote:I like the use of the turbo manifold on backwards to point the exhaust in a useful direction.
I don't see why they wouldn't run with the factory ECU - other than the fact that they're scared by the wiring loom that has more wiring in it than the rest of the car's wiring loom put together!

This retro-fitting of EDIS intrigues me...imagine an EA81 with no dizzy, just a coil pack and 4 short leads...and no more points or dizzy cap to get wet!
Would it be easy to fit? Apart from the custom trigger ring, and what about performance gains? setup right I'm sure there would be significant reliability gains as well?

Will it ever end!?

take simple and make it difficult eh? Four coil over plug coils to die separately, an ECU to fry or get wet, or just play up
You'd likely gain more by leaving your spare and jack at home, toss the stereo and its speakers, unused seating and belts and drive around on $5 worth of fuel at a time
Nice thinking though - be nice if someone in China could sell a conversion kit real cheap to do old Subes

this may interest someone... what looks like an EJ distributor for 25 bucks:

I have a mate with a Beetle and didnt wanna go with a Subaru engine because of the wiring associated with an ECU

I'll be keen to see if I'm wrong, but the part that slots into the back of the cam, namely the housing is too deep from my memory of that blanking plate on the back of the driver's side cam - unless you need a bracket to mount it to such as the one on the front of the passenger's cam shaft.

That looks more like a mazda or laser dizzy
the numbers for the EJ dizzy are
22100 AA460
NO: 3119
TYPE T2T82371A DO2
Mitsubishi Electric Corp Japan
Gannon if your mate wants to use a dizzy the lucas dizzy for the Escort is the one that fits with the least fuss, you must get the matching coil as well or a fiori dizzy (good luck with the fiori dizzy)
