4.44 ratio dual range ?

4.44 ratio dual range ?
I have an sti box in my rs lib, 4.44 final drive ratio , i would really like to put a dual range box in because the current one is useless pulling boat out of the water. Where as My old stock standard l series wagon pulled it out in low range no problems at all.
I'd like to keep the LSD so does anyone know if the 4.44 was made in dual range ? Or will I need to source a 4.11 with matching diff ?
Any advice much appreciated,

The close ratio 6 speed STi box should do it, just keep it in 1st longer.

The dual range AWD boxes have 1.19:1 or 1.47:1 so if you want 1.59:1 you will need to read this
you will be able to do it but you must get the crown wheel machined so the 4.11 or 4.44 crown gear doesnt smash into the low range.

He said he had an STi box. All STi boxes are 6 speed, and have very close gearing. So his 1st gear is like a low range gear compared to our 1st gear.TOONGA wrote:^^^^What? Please explain? ^^^^:)

I think it was around 1999 or 2000 when the STi first got the 6 speed, before that they were 5 speeds like the WRX
If the gearbox has closer ratios, wouldnt that make first gear higher?

Sti's came out 5 speed in the GC Impreza (classic shape), they changed to 6 speed in the GD Impreza (bugeye shape) but either boxes will not be able to be fitted with Dual Range because the D/R box has a 2 piece input shaft and the Turbo boxes are a 1 piece. You'd be better off selling the STi box and buying a 4.11 D/R box and then do the L.Series Low Range conversion and fit 4.44 if you really need the extra-extra low range but IMO you'd be happy enough with 4.11 and L.Series Low Range.

The six speed STi boxes generally have a taller first and a low 6th, great for racing.
If you use an L seires low range with 4.44 diff you have take a lot off the crownwheel teeth and I mean a lot.
With L series low range and the 4.11 you only need to take the corner off the crownwheel.
4.11 is the easiest, when
swapping bits.

I'm pretty sure someone on the forum just bought a 4.11 LSD. Hydrowill maybe? Got it for a song too. If you can't find one there's info on how to change the centre over. Not that hard to do.

This is what I have in my SF Forester. Personally it is a nice box and setup but my biggest let down is power from the piss poor gutless 2.0l (soon to be changed as I've gone through 2 of them already) and open diffs.a gearbox out of an SF Forester has 4.11 final and a 1.447 low range which is the best low range available in an EJ box. With an EJ25 and rear plated LSD it'd go almost anywhere. The L-Series low range would be nice but with the 1.447.1 in the SF it isn't too bad, It certainly isn't on the list to be changed anytime soon if at all..

2.0 litre forester boxes are good, reasonable low range.
BUT, Check the gear ratios (1-5) compared to what you have now and work out what revs you will be doing compared to current gear ratios.
And of course the speedo gear ratio.
If you are running forester size wheels, no problems, otherwise carefully do the maths before it causes headaches.

Supposedly the 2002 Subaru Outback has 4.44 final driver dual range. Is this really true or misinformation?
