5spd EJ AWD dual range gearbox with 1.5 low range

Post by AndrewT » Tue Sep 24, 2013 2:49 pm

So I know these exist. Dual range AWD boxes are quite common (from early Libs etc) but these have a pretty lame 1.1:1 ratio low range. The 1.5 is most common in L series dual range boxes. But I know there are certain Impreza 5spd EJ dual range boxes which do in fact have the proper 1.5 low range gear.

Can anyone confirm;
- Gearbox code for these boxes?
- Assume these are a "push style" clutch setup with cable operation (not hydraulic)?
- Donor car models these can be found in?

Seems like a decent upgrade for an L series with a powerful EJ engine over the L series box so we get AWD instead of just front wheel drive for day to day driving.

Keen to pick one up soon so anyone with the info please pass it on so I can try to track one down.

thanks.

2.0L Foresters and GX and RX 2.0L Imprezas are your starting point, not sure of what years but I'd be looking early models

The SF 2.0l foz came with the best factory AWD DR with a 1.447 low range. L-Series now range is 1.59. About a 15% difference.
The Forester box is pretty decent for a standard box. ..
Even with AWD and all this wet weather Perth has been having I'm still having traction issues in the wet. Lol I guess mostly worn all terrains don't really help with a torquey worked ej25 n/a.

Cant speak for other Subies but my SF Foz is hydraulic clutch, dont know if its push or pull. The 1.447:1 LR is good but if I had the funds I'd be putting the L-series LR (1.59:1) in, others that have done it have said it makes a big difference, not just going up hills but also coming back down....

non turbo it'd be a push clutch.

Found a gearbox, it's code is TY755XS1AA - from a `98 Forester.
Pretty difficult to find out definitively what the low range ratio is - can't find a decent listing which has that info. Even Subaru can't tell me.
Pretty sure it would be the 1.447:1
Is the L series low range gear definitely interchangable into that gearbox anyway? I remember hearing it can only be interchanged into certain EJ gearboxes and not all.

The 1.447:1 would do for my purposes at this stage anyway I think.

I have done a few L series low range into EJ boxes, different box types require a slightly different method/parts.
Never not been unable to fit L low to a dual range EJ box, yet.
Some non turbo boxes have the casting so you can run either clutch system.
2.0 litre Forestor boxes have the 1.447, but not the 2.5 Forestors.
Then you have diff ratios, 4.11 is common in those boxes, but check.
L serious, still.

Agree with tambox, SF Forester LR is definitely 1.447:1

The L series LR will fit into the DR EJ box but you will have to shave a little off it. There is an excellent thread on it here:
Low Range Conversion Part 1 - OffroadingSubarus.com

Diff ratios are different for auto or manual. All Forester manuals have 4.111:1 diff ratio, IIRC autos are 4.44:1
