Maximum size bore for EA81

Post by Willy Fisterbottom » Tue Mar 18, 2014 7:02 am

Breaking my thread virginty here.

I'm trying to find out the maximum size people have succesfully bored out an EA81 to?
My EA81 manual gives a maximum OEM size of 92.5mm (20 thou over) for pistons up from 92mm.

I've read on a post that Steptoe went to 40 thou (93mm).

I'm only asking as I've stripped down an old EA81 I've had sitting around for a few years for my 77 1600 Coupe but, one of the bores was full of water and 92.5mm (20 thou over) isn't going to be enough to clean her up.

It is the piston available (to suit the intended application of that piston, by the piston manufacturer) that determines the bore limit. My machinist wants pistons first before any rebore happens. Good on ya for using search funktion ! I got 180,000km out of the first EA81 40 thou rebore no probs :)

Piston isn't the limit the limit is how much meat is in the bore. I see people looking at EJ20 pistons, I've got some nice EJ22 pistons at 96.9mm but 4.9mm (=2.45 of meat) over size might be pushing it lol. This would give me 1976cc :p
