Point in the right direction please

Post by badga880 » Mon Apr 28, 2014 6:59 am

I have read and re read threads on 5 speed into brumby behind EA81, but I think I have read to much and now missing the point, can anyone recommend someone in Brisbane or Gold Coasts for a clutch kit and throw out bearing, I can show them the gearbox, the flywheel and they can sell me the correct parts and if needed let me know who could machine the flywheel if needed I have installed the pedal box from an L series already will be fitting piece tail shaft just need this clutch sorted thanks again especially for thick people like me
Thanks

b l o o d y h e l l !! I know how you feel :) Think it is called information overload.

You are nearly there but the hard part is ours now, guiding you :)

Don't wait for a recommendation find a shop that specialises in brakes and clutch, or just clutches if they exist, but it is usually brake and clutch. You go in there telling them what you wanna do and might just baffle them

How many flywheels do you have ?If just one and it is the EA81, you better remind us what diameter.

Working and thinking backwards now, I think if I had used an EA82 flywheel I would have had it easier - no starter motor spacer ring to make, would be a complete EA82 4WD clutch kit to bolt up to the EA82 flywheel with EA82 step specs, the throw out clutch release bearing would be correct.

Can someone repeat what is needed to work an EA82 flywheel on the back of an EA81 please? EA82 used fatter shanked bolts ? So no work needed to fit ?

You got the whole L Series pedal box bolted in to MY/ Brumby ? Heard that suggested before, just don't look like they will just bolt up ! Guess I will be trying that myself one day then...

clutch kits.. you gotta love them when mix matching

Ok, to make everything simple, I'd go and get yourself an M.Y. Series 4WD 225mm disc diameter flywheel (if you don't already have one behind your engine). Then you just need to buy yourself a complete L. Series Clutch kit R397N. These can be brought in higher clamping pressure if doing lots of 4WDing or Towing. The kit comes with release bearing but you should buy yourself a new spigot bearing (6201) plus I highly recommend you have the flywheel refaced before fitting the new clutch.

Because over the years there are so many combinations of clutches, you will need to look at your flywheel before you buy anything. From memory, all 4WD model Subaru EA81 engines after 1983 were 225mm but could have been replaced between then and now. The earlier ones were 200mm, so you should measure your one first.

OK, need to ask a question here

looking at the MY pressure plates spring fingers...

does the 225mm pressure plate have a greater size 'hole' at the tip?

I know I ran the L Series throwout release bearing TBR 389 ? and it was not pushing on the fingertips of the 200 mm pressure plate fingers, so made it a harder pedal for my MY pedal with L clutch cable in MY pedal box set up

I have two listings for for EA81 225mm clutch kits, differing only by the TBR336 and TBR326 numbers, never had both out to look to compare their differences ??

Poor badga !

This will only confuse the OP, so badga880 please don't worry about what I type here to Steptoe :)

The EA81 225mm plate is a different plate to the EA82 225mm plate, thus the reason for 2 different thrust/release bearings. The M.Y. Series (EA81) 4 speed uses a thrust bearing carrier to hold the bearing, where as the L.Series (EA82) 5 speed uses an all in one setup.

The 389 clutch release bearing is for the EA82 5 speed setup and works on either the 200mm or 225mm from the EA82 setup ONLY, not the 200mm or 225mm for the M.Y. Series 4 speed (or 5 speed 2WD) models.

The 2 different release bearing for the M.Y. Series was due to the ID size of the bearing.

Hi peoples well just to make things a bit more hectic, I have 2 flywheels they both measure pretty close to 228mm so with this I am thinking 225mm as 8mm is to far from 220mm for a measuring mistake. Maybe I should be looking for an EA82 flywheel although it should not be to difficult to make a spacers for the starter.
STEPTOE fitting the L series pedal box was not that bad, but had to remove it to re bend accelerator pedal,
To sum up find a clutch mob take gearbox and flywheel to them say HELP and all should be good. Except make spacer for starter, and hope they also understand Subaru and silly bastards like me for saying lets put a 5 speed in while motor out
Thanks again

If you use an EA82 flywheel, there is no need for starter spacer - you'll see that if you lay an EA81 flywheel on its crank side down, next to an EA82 flywheel crank face down on same flat surface. Mesh the ring gears and see one is lower than the other. Use an EA81 flywheel - you'll need a 4mm spacer.

I have only just tossed an A82 L Series pedal box and now realise making more work for self adapting MY ones ! I recall checking the difference years ago. Now see you need to extend the top plate to bolt up to MY steering column support.

My next L Sries 5 speed conversion gets a special L Series RX pedal box - thanks for the inspiration :)

I once accidentally fitted up an EA82 pressure plate to an EA81 225mm flywheel, just got some minor crunching selecting gears due to the 21mm and 23 mm step differences in the flywheel, also reflect in the pressure plate

So the EA82 flywheel goes in the EA81 bellhousing without any issues? and the timing marks are aligned the same??

It's always best to get the flywheel machined to the in-step of the EA82

The 2 sizes of clutch kits for the M.Y. Series is 8" (or 200mm) or 9" (or 225mm), so at 228mm you have the 9" flywheel. You find the friction disc area will always be larger to allow clearance for expansion and free spinning.

In a nutshell, so it seems . EA81 have 23mm step, EA82 a 21mm, so more meat comes of the upper facing.

OK, you rebend the EA82 accy pedal (think you'v found where the L Series were wider :) ) , would mean you are going to need to use the L Series acc cable ? Think L has a ball and nylon socket, MY has a 4mm cast alloy 'end' ?

:) I think you have asked fewer questions than I did when I did mine - found this site, got different answers too !

Steptoe..yep welded brumby acc cable fitting to L series pedal box,,

bugger should have never said those couple of words " 5 speed no problems....lol" so I need to find a machinist now on the gold coast to face of 2mm just double checked the flywheel is a 23mm step.
Thanks seem to be heading in the right direction now...lol

Ok thanks to every one who helper me on this clutch problem ....Final outcome, well until I drive it down the road.....I took ea81 flywheel 225m with 23m step old pressure plate and clutch to a clutch specialist, he confirmed that an ea 82 clutch kit would fit the flywheel but was about 2mm out on the step on the flywheel. Which is why it is suggested that it needs to be machined, but the clutch bloke did a few measurements and confirmed that with an ea81 pressure plate an ea82 friction plate ea82 throw outbearing it will all work without machining the flywheel, the only thing he see's as not quite spot on is that the clutch pedal will be a little bit heavier as the throw out bearing pushes on the plate fingers a bit further out front the centre, this is how it is going to go in the car and I will let you know the actual feel. Once I do the exhaust, cv joints 2 piece tail shaft refit dash fit liberty seats fit electric windows fit cruise control fit central locking refit windscreen and get the bloody heater working and regas air con. That should take me a couple of hours.

You have sorted that dude - with the L Series crutch pedal ! The MY pedal pulls 15,16mm whereas the L pedal I installed gave me the spec 25mm pull at the fork. You'll be right. Be even better if you stuck an EA82 in with it. Lovin' mine, zero lifter tick. tappet tick, running sweet :)

Highly recommend you grease the crap out of the clutch cable before you install it

Yes will be lubricating the cable that is for sure, where is the hydraulic clutch kit when you need one,
Steptoe... I will probably agree with you about the 82 should have been fitted but this 81 has rebuilt balanced and cam so when I stuff it 82 can go in
Once again people thanks

Hydraulic setup is not available on the L.Series 5 speed, as there is no bolt holes to hold the slave cylinder but fit an AWD 5 speed from a Gen2 Lib or later :)
