2nd gear gone??? me thinks

Post by vidler » Wed Nov 22, 2006 9:50 pm

yeah. just driving this arvo, not thrashing, noticed what orriginally sounded like a vibration, seems a bit worse... quite loud grinding sound in 2nd. still grabs the gear fine, just makes an unbearable sound.... who reckons its on its way out???

all mine did was a reasonable BANG and 2nd gear was completely stripped

second is very common to go on the buggers :(

so yeah is definately a possibility

got oil in it?
any metal flakes in the oil?
make the noises in any other gears?
hard to get into second?
slip at all in second?

if there is a bad anything (noise, vibration) and it's only there in one specific gear than it's most likely a gearbox ka-put :(

If it helps, some guy on the Perth-wrx forum offered me a `98 wrx gearbox for $1000 the other day...

it may help with the argument of getting another car as well...... i need something to get my gearbox with:)

Yeah it's final drive is probably still 3.9 (I think that's standard for an Aussie WRX of that era).
Remember the ratios of all the individual gears will also differ.

4.11 or 444's are slightly better. tho im running 04 GD WRX / LIB from japan slightly better and newer, tho a ppg gearset is going to save you in the long run. dont listen to anyone else. ive done 5x 3.9's i know!

The gearbox cross members are the same, bolts up to the engine the same. Linkages are all the same. You will require to use new front cv’s from the GD series wrx as they use male inner’s the outers still suit the GC style hubs.. the rear diff obviously to match front diff.. also needs new cv’s same story outers will still suit the CG hubs..
