noicy first gear in liberty gearbox

Hi, I have a brumby with an EJ20 turbo from a liberty, with a full liberty/wrx driveline.

Yesterday the gearbox started making a strange noise, but only in first gear.
It sounds like a ticking noise, almost like a noisy CV, but only in first gear (hence, the gearbox). Almost like a tooth is damaged and makes a noise every revolution inside the box.

Can anyone shed some light on this noise?
I have heard early SUBI gearboxes aren't always up to the task - so this could be an easy diagnosis for the die hard subi nuts.

gearboxes are subaru's weak point. its a little unusual for 1st gear to be going though, 2nd is the main culpurit for these boxes as a couple of members obn this forum can gladle inform u
