'L' Series 3spd Auto.....

Post by Xtreme_RX » Thu Mar 08, 2007 8:35 am

Just picked up my girlfriends car & the auto is doing funny things..

The car is a 1989 MPFI EA82 with a 3spd front wheel drive auto.

The auto won’t take off in 1st gear. It is very sluggish until about 25kms/hr where it normally would change in to second. If I manually select 1st it takes off fine but when I push the auto selector in to 2nd it wont change gear it will pull to redline if I back off it will hold 1st for 4 or 5 seconds then slam in to second. It occasionally won’t find drive (3rd).

What’s wrong with it?
I'm suspecting the governor has a flogged out gear.
Would I be correct in saying that?

Other than that the auto drives fine it will pull 120kms/hr fine & still want to go harder.

It will be getting a 3spd 4WD conversion soon, but I want it driveable between now & then.

Is the transmission fluid at the right level? This can make a massive difference to how an auto performs cause they work on oil pressure.

Yeah I meant to add that the fluid level is just above full.
& The front diff oil is gold still - so the front seal is still ok.
