EA 82 camshaft ID-ing ?

Post by discopotato03 » Sat Jun 23, 2007 8:42 pm

Hi all , been digging through the 87 WS Manual looking at EA82 factory cam profiles .

I was wondering if anyone knows if the camshafts have any identifying marks on them , I'd like the longest factory cams I can get my hands on because these engines need all the breathing help they can get .
The manual doesn't say which MPFI N/A cams we got but I'd reckon its the 256 deg period ones .

Also for the record the manual shows the static compression ratio used with the different cam profiles :

10-54 49-15 ... 244 Deg (Carb) ..............9.0:1
14-56 56-14 ... 250 Deg (MPFI Turbo) .....7.7:1
16-60 60-16 ... 256 Deg (MPFI N/A) ........9.5:1
16-64 60-20 ... 260 Deg (MPFI N/A) ........9.7:1

Its pretty obvious that as the compression ratio rises the cam durations increase - except for the turbo where dynamic or effective CR gets a rocket on boost .

So I reckon the 260 or 256 cams with the 9:1 CR pistons should make for a crisper road turbo engine of course with better fuel ie 96-98 oct and something like a Liberty RS water/air intercooler . The Turbo Spider intake I have and surprisingly its throttle plate is the same as the garden variety MPFI type . I want to get torque from extra airflow rather than boost pressure because the standard EFI system probably doesn't have much headroom over standard .

Anyhow cam markings anyone ? ... Cheers A .

i marked mine on disassembly (scratched a T in em for turbo) if ia can get through the junk and actually find 'em i will have a look for any distinctive casting marks but you'd almost expect them to be the same - then machined to profile :(, then a dollop if paint colour to differentiate

There have been a few on the MB that have played with cams on the EA82T i only know of QuickRX that had a custom set of rally cams that had any huge success. Alot of the Rally guys also timed the cams in better but this made for a very peaky engine.

I have pulled a few EA engines down but dont remember there being and markings to distinguish the different grinds,
